A bank just disclosed AI costs of $2,130 per employee per month. The CFOs who approved these tools are scrambling after surprise invoices they didn't see coming.

Here's the one thing to do this week: pull up every AI tool your business is paying for and sort them into two columns, fixed monthly fee or consumption-based. Anything consumption-based gets a spending cap set before Friday. Most platforms have the setting built in. Most people never turn it on.

The same billing behavior that blindsided a Wall Street finance team is available at your scale too.

Which of your AI tools could send you a bill you didn't expect?

A restaurant in Singapore saved 15 to 20 hours a week with AI, and none of it involved a chatbot or a social media tool. They put it on dishwashing logistics, delivery routing, and shift scheduling. The boring stuff nobody brags about.

The lesson is simple: one AI tool saves you minutes. A dozen tools, each saving a few minutes on something that repeats every day, saves you hours. We call it the stacking principle, and it works whether you run a restaurant, a catering operation, or a small team of any kind.

Start with a list of the five most repetitive tasks your team does every week. Pick one. Try it differently.

What's the most repetitive task your team does that you've never once stopped to question?

Yelp just started calling restaurants on behalf of customers. Their new AI feature, Check for Me, dials your front desk, asks about wait times, and texts the diner the result before they decide where to go. The customer never talked to you. An AI agent evaluated your phone experience and made a recommendation based on what it heard.

One thing you can do this week: call your own restaurant at 7pm on a Friday from a number nobody there recognizes. Count the rings. Listen to the greeting. Ask about the wait. That's what Yelp's agent is about to hear.

If you called your own place right now, cold, as a stranger, would you walk through the door?

Toast just released real AI usage data from thousands of restaurants, and one number stopped us cold: 53% of all AI queries happen during peak lunch or dinner service, not the next morning.

Managers aren't using AI to plan the future. They're using it to fix the present, in the middle of service, from their phones.

There's a concept in here we call the two-clock problem: the gap between when something goes wrong and when you find out about it. That gap is what it costs you, in comps, in table time, in overtime you didn't catch until Friday.

If your managers can't get a real-time answer about labor or sales during a dinner rush, that's the thing worth fixing first.

What's the longest you've gone before finding out something went sideways on a busy night?

Starlink's AI call center just confirmed something every local business owner needs to sit with: 20,000 calls a day, 70% resolved without a human, and one in four sales calls closed before the caller hangs up.

The AI issues credits, ships hardware, and answers questions. At $0.08 per minute, the math against a fully loaded front desk employee is not close.

We've been building AI receptionists for local businesses for a couple of years now, and the objection we still hear most is "our clients want a real person." Starlink's customers wanted that too. Seventy percent of them got their problem solved anyway.

Quick exercise: what are the five questions your phone staff answers most? If three of them are factual and repeatable, you already have a use case.

GE Appliances is running 800 AI agents across its operations, and one of them just cut backorders by 25%. Its only job was answering "where is my order?" automatically across 600 suppliers.

The takeaway for any local business owner: you don't need 800 agents. You need one. Start with the task that's high-frequency, low-judgment, and currently eating your team's morning. Appointment reminders, follow-up sequences, status updates. That's your boring middle, and that's where agents win first.

What's the one repetitive task in your business that nobody actually enjoys doing?

Air India collapsed a 14-day refund process into four hours. Not with a faster support team, and not with a chatbot. With an AI agent that replaced the approval bureaucracy behind the scenes, coordinating validations and handoffs without anyone waiting on anyone else.

The move most businesses are still missing: there's a difference between an AI that answers questions and an AI that completes a process. One tells your customer it'll take 14 days. The other actually finishes it in four hours.

What's the process in your business that touches the most hands before a customer sees a result?

A dental practice in Tempe just made the news for explaining AI X-ray tools to patients in English and Korean, before any patient even thought to ask. That's not a technology story. That's a transparency play, and it's winning them local trust and press coverage at the same time.

A 2026 ADA survey found 43% of dentists are already using AI in some form. The gap between those practices and everyone else is now something patients can actually see and feel.

One concrete move for this week: if your practice uses any AI-assisted tools, draft one plain paragraph explaining what it does and that your provider still makes every decision. Get it on your website and at the front desk.

If your patient community speaks more than one language, you already know what to do.

If a patient walked in tomorrow and asked whether your business uses AI, do you have an answer ready that you're proud of?

Toast just rolled out AI agents inside its POS that build labor schedules, manage your online reviews, and run marketing campaigns against your own sales data. No new vendor. No new login. It's already in the platform.

The one we'd turn on first for almost any restaurant? The Reviews Agent. It catches a frustrated customer before they post publicly and sends them to you directly instead. Unanswered bad reviews cost real money, and this one patches that hole fast.

If you're not on Toast, this still applies to you: ask your current POS provider what their AI roadmap looks like. If they don't have an answer, that's worth knowing before your next contract renewal.

What's the one operational headache in your restaurant that you'd hand off to an AI first?

Sophos just published a number worth paying attention to. Using OpenAI's Daybreak model, they cut threat investigation time by 96% and automated 52% of their security cases without a human analyst touching them.

This isn't really a cybersecurity story. The Sophos analysts were reading data, comparing patterns, writing summaries, and making recommendations. That's what a lot of people do in a lot of businesses every day.

The shift happening here: AI stops being the assistant and becomes the one doing the work. The human reviews the output instead of producing it.

One thing you can do this week: pick one role on your team where most of the time goes into gathering and summarizing information before a decision gets made. Write down the inputs and the output. If you can describe the task in a paragraph, AI can probably do a first draft.

Which role in your business came to mind first?
