You're researching visas for a life you haven't designed yet. That's why it keeps stalling.
Most people start with a country. Portugal because of a photo, Mexico because the flight is short. Everything after that is a guess wearing the clothes of research.
The country is close to the last decision, not the first. Here's the order I'd use.
What you're building from. Not what you want to do next. What you already have.
Whether the work travels. The four questions I will put up later today.
What you're living on for the first year. Not the projection, the number, and how many months you can cover if the first two clients take longer than you planned.
What the life needs to have in it. Your people, language, healthcare you can actually navigate, whether you can be yourself somewhere without editing. None of that is soft. It decides whether you stay once you've gone.
What you're willing to risk. Said plainly, because most of what you'll read won't say it.
And then the country, which by this point is a shortlist rather than a daydream, because the answers above have already ruled most places out.
Each answer narrows the next one. Run it backwards and every question stays open at once, which is exactly what makes this feel impossible.
None of this is legal or tax advice and it doesn't replace someone qualified where you land. It's the work you do first, so that when you get to them you know what you're asking.
