The NextGen of ®ybravos are ready to serve, heal, advocate, and uplift.

In the Circle of Life of nursing, today’s students are tomorrow’s caregivers—carrying forward a legacy already shaped by distinguished nurses across our community.

Across Miami-Dade, nursing pathways through institutions like , Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing and Health Sciences, St. Thomas University, the , and other programs such as .oficial and West Coast University are preparing thousands of new nursing graduates each year entering the profession with purpose, skill, and cultural understanding.

For many multicultural nurses just beginning their careers, nursing is more than a profession, it is a pathway to stability, mobility, and long-term prosperity, grounded in service and strengthened by trust.

Through cultural awareness, language access, and compassionate care, this NextGen continues building a healthcare system that reflects the communities it serves.

Congratulations to the newest graduates of nursing, our NextGen of NursesBravas™ y Bravos. The Circle of Life continues, carried forward by them.

In Memory Beyond the Horizon. 🇺🇸

Today is a reminder that some sacrifices echo far beyond what we can see. We honor the lives, courage, and service of the fallen heroes who shaped the freedoms we hold today.

Remembering them with gratitude this Memorial Day.

™ Spotlight: Dr. Geisy Vilabrille, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, PMHNP

As part of this year’s Circle of Life campaign, we honor the full journey of care—every stage, every story, every hand that heals.

From Cuba to Costa Rica to the United States, Dr. Geisy Vilabrille rebuilt her path again and again, turning every challenge into care.

“Siempre trabajé y siempre estudié en la noche.”

Originally trained as a physician and surgeon, one of the most defining moments of her career was operating on her own mother—an experience that forever shaped her understanding of trust, responsibility, and compassionate care.

By 1999, she arrived in the United States and began rebuilding from the ground up—working in ICU, telemetry, case management, leadership, primary care, psychiatry, neurology, hospice, and palliative care while continuing to study at night.

“The system did not guide me—but that became my mission.”

She went on to earn her BSN, MSN, post-master’s training in Psychiatric Mental Health, and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), dedicating her career to ensuring others never feel lost in the system.

Today, she serves as DNP Program Coordinator at Ana G. Méndez University, mentoring the next generation of nurse practitioners and doctoral nursing students.

“Si alguien me hubiera guiado, yo hubiera llegado más rápido… por eso yo guío a otros.”

Her legacy is also generational. Her daughter is a Doctor of Nursing Practice, and her son is currently pursuing his nursing degree at Florida International University.

When asked what defines a Nurse Brava, she reflects:

“A Nurse Brava es alguien que no olvida de dónde viene. Lidera con conocimiento, pero más importante, con el corazón.”

And through every chapter of her journey, one truth remains:

“Soy realizada.”

We’re proud to share a story rooted in the fields of Mexicali and the Imperial Valley, carried forward by UC Berkeley graduate Lorenzo Cancel and his mother, Laura Cancel Hernández.

“My mom taught me to show up—physically—for everything.”

She came home exhausted from long days working in the fields, yet still showed up to every school event, every performance, every moment that mattered.

As a child, he thought that was normal. Only later did he understand: every moment she showed up was a sacrifice.

When he was diagnosed with cancer, that sacrifice became impossible to ignore—she never left his side. Not once.

And when he left for UC Berkeley, she helped him move in like it was just another act of love—strong, steady, and quietly carrying everything.

“I saw her work in the fields early on.”

Now he understands what that truly meant: endurance, love, and sacrifice turned into opportunity.

She didn’t just raise a son—she built a future where others could rise.

“And everything I am began with her sacrifice turning into love.”

We’re proud to share a story that carries multigenerational weight—one that begins with Christian Roig’s abuela, who we honored years ago,
and lives on through his mother, Carmen Corvos-Roig.

“She used to take me with her to work, to dinners—I saw how hard she worked in real time. She’s a badass. One of the best.”

What he didn’t realize then was that he was learning what resilience looks like when it’s lived every day—not explained.

“Growing up, I didn’t always have the language for it—but I always understood what it looked like.”

His grandmother came to this country with almost nothing—but carried what mattered.
A pair of earrings hidden in her bra, the only piece of her life she refused to leave behind.

What she built came from grit, sacrifice,
and an unshakable will to survive.

His mother took that foundation and built forward.
The first in her family to go to university,
she turned sacrifice into opportunity—
not just for herself, but for what came next.

“She didn’t just show me success—she showed me the effort behind it.”

Because nothing he has is random.
It was earned through someone else’s sacrifice.

Not through excess—but awareness.
Not through comfort—but perspective.

“What felt normal to me was a luxury to her.”

She didn’t just raise a son—she raised someone who stays rooted.

To Christian, sharing the legacy of these women means everything. Because it’s not just their story—
it’s who he is.

People might call it being a badass.

But in his family, there’s always been another word for it.

At Semilla Multicultural, we’re proud to support our community of healers — — from those caring for our most vulnerable and tiniest patients, to those shaping the next generation of nurses with compassion, courage, and corazón.

As part of this year’s Circle of Life campaign, we honor the full journey of care — every stage, every story, every hand that heals.

Our first ™ feature this year is Raiza Figueredo-Guillo.

“They Were There for Us. Now It’s Our Turn.”

A Nurse Brava’s Mission to Heal, Guide, and Uplift Families Through Life’s Most Difficult Transitions.
For this Advanced Nurse Practitioner at Catholic Health Services, nursing was never just a career — it was a calling grounded in compassion, family, and faith.

Raised in a Cuban family, Raiza Figueredo-Guillo once dreamed of becoming a pediatrician. But while studying at the University of Florida, she realized her heart was leading her toward nursing instead.

“I remember calling my mom crying,” she recalls. “I told her I didn’t want to be a doctor anymore.”

Her mother’s response changed everything:
“Siempre te vi como una enfermera. La que está ahí con el paciente… Yo estoy orgullosa de ti.”

She went on to begin her nursing career in 1996, serving children at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital before eventually dedicating her work to underserved elderly patients and their families.

Today at Catholic Health Services, she helps families navigate some of life’s hardest transitions — from hospital care to home health, assisted living, and long-term care.

“Our parents once cared for us,” she says. “Now it’s our turn to care for them.”

For her, nursing has always been about more than medicine.

“It comes from the heart,” she says. “Nursing is a true vocation.”

We’re proud to share a story from right here in Miami—where and his family are part of our Hispanic community, just like all of us at Semilla Multicultural.

It means a lot to have Fernando open up and share something he’s always carried quietly but deeply: his love and respect for his mom, Elsa.

“My mom, Elsa, is the reason I am who I am today. Everything I learned about optimism, resilience, and showing up for your family came from watching her.”

She lives with multiple sclerosis every single day—and still shows up with strength, grace, and a smile that doesn’t quit.

And for him, that changed everything.

The way he sees effort.
The way he understands discipline.
The way he moves through hard days.

“She doesn’t let her condition define her. Instead, she defines how she responds to it—every single day.”

That became his example. Not something abstract—something lived, every day, at home.

He’ll tell you it’s hard to complain about a tough practice or a long day when he thinks about what she carries and still chooses to meet life with optimism.

Her strength didn’t just inspire him—it grounded him. It taught him that difficulty isn’t something to run from, but something to meet head-on, with heart.

A mamá brava who didn’t just raise a son—she shaped a Rooted Son.

And maybe that’s what stays with you most.

He works hard. He believes in himself. Not because of where he is now—but because of where he comes from, and the example she continues to set.

To show up.
To stay optimistic.
To keep going.

That’s why Mi Mamá Es Una Brava™

With much gratitude to the Mendoza family! ✨
