Call for Podcast Guests

Your Gray Matters began as a passion project. As I got older, I thought battling age discrimination in the marketing, advertising, creative and liberal industries would be a great way to give back. About two years ago I created a podcast: One Take: Because Life has No Rehearsal. 15-20 minutes of totally candid, unrehearsed, unedited comments from people over 55 who have seen (and made) tectonic shifts in their industries.

We examine 4 questions: what was your decisive professional moment? (And, no, it doesn’t automatically mean the past, some decisive moments were yesterday). What change in your industry took you completely by surprise? What did you do about it? And, finally, what would you tell a CEO about the value of older workers?

For everyone who is still confused by tariffs and sales tax:

1. A tariff is applied on a blanket basis to everything coming from a country. It is paid by the importer of the goods in the US.

2. A sales tax is applied by the state to the sale of certain goods. It is paid by the buyer.

So, here's the deal: Let's say someone applies a blanket tariff of 10% to every good coming from China.

Before the tariff, you were paying $100 for that product AND a sales tax of, say, 7%, so your total outlay is $107...

$100 x 1.07 = $107.00

After the tariff, you will pay $110 for that good AND a sales tax of 7% or $117.7

$100 x 1.1 = $110 x 1.07 = $117.7 so you are paying for the tariff.

If the importer chose to absorb the tariff, then you would not pay for it. So... what do YOU think are the chances of the importer paying for the tariff?

Let's say the importer had a margin of 30%... that is, he made $30 on the product. If the importer has to absorb $10, his margin decreases by 33% to $20. Keep dreaming.

Tariffs just increase the cost of everything.
