A mama black bear and her two cubs spent most of the weekend in a 140-year-old oak tree just across the street from the Congregational Church of Middlebury, near the intersection of Main and North Pleasant streets.

The bears’ lofty antics — spurred by their fear of loud vehicles and the humans bent on surveying them — began at around dawn on Saturday, Oct. 17, and continued until dusk on Sunday, Oct. 18. That’s when Vermont Fish & Wildlife officials and Middlebury police created enough of a human-free zone to ease the sow and her two cubs across North Pleasant Street (Route 7) and back toward Chipman Hill and into the forest there.

The Middlebury College Department of Theater will present John Cariani’s “Almost, Maine” Oct. 29-31.

The show, directed by theater professor (and department chair) Alex Draper, is set on a cold, clear, midwinter night, with the northern lights hovering in the star-filled sky above. The residents of Almost, Maine — a place so far north it’s almost in Canada — find themselves falling in love in unexpected, surprising and hilarious ways.

While many small opera companies fill their seasons with beloved but safe staples of the standard repertoire, Opera Company of Middlebury has made a habit of taking on the worthwhile risk of contemporary opera in its fall productions, introducing audiences to newer works that can be challenging and rewarding.

“Rappahannock County,” which opened Sept. 30 as part of the company’s “Music in Troubled Times” festival, is very much in that tradition.
