Please be aware of a fraud scheme that is becoming increasingly common targeting real estate agents.
Agents are receiving phone calls from individuals posing as potential buyers who request a virtual tour of a property. The “buyer” then asks the agent to join a Zoom meeting using a link they provide.
Once the agent clicks on the link, the scammer may gain access to the agent’s computer and monitor activity, including access to accounts, passwords, emails, and potentially even the device’s camera and microphone.
In some cases, hackers remain undetected and wait until just before closing to send fraudulent wire instructions to buyers, making the emails appear as though they are coming directly from the title or closing company. This can result in buyers unknowingly wiring funds to fraudulent accounts.
Please use extreme caution before clicking on any Zoom or meeting links sent by unknown individuals.
As a best practice, agents should create the Zoom meeting themselves and send their own secure meeting link to clients or prospective buyers. In addition, always verify wire instructions directly with the title or closing company using a trusted phone number before any funds are transferred.
Staying cautious and following safe technology practices can help protect your personal information, client data, and business accounts.
