New glass garden trellis is installed.

Finally getting around to making the glass pieces for this garden trellis. Many more to go. It is about 3.5 feet x 4.5 feet in size and will be back lit.

Starting on a new, more complicated cast glass piece. The first step is underway on the first of two glass elements.

1. Clay model of each piece
2. Make mold of the clay models.
3. Make a wax cast of each mold.
4. Clean up wax castings.
5. Make high temperature plaster mold of each wax casting
6. Steam out wax.
7. Burn off organic materials from mold.
8. Fill with glass frit and fire for a couple days in the kiln.
9. Remove glass from plaster mold and cold work the glass. (sanding and grinding)
10. Assembly of metal armature and lighting components.

Simple! Not so much. Time consuming, yes!

We happened upon this printmakers studio while walking the streets of Lisbon Portugal. It was a collective of artists sharing the space. The smell of printing ink was very heavy. It was fun to see the stuff they have created and hearing the stories behind the work.

One piece we purchased spoke to the covid lockdowns in the beginning of the pandemic. The sentiment on the poster was “Bring back the night” as no one was allowed to gather in coffee shops and restaurants then and they longed to rejoin their communities. Not something you’d find selling in a shop catering to tourists.

I’d like to do this more often as the art felt more authentic.
