Target Nearby Social Media Users

Social media can be targeted to your local area -- if you know how to use it that way.

Facebook, for instance, has an option specifically to allow you to market (“promote”) your business to other local Facebook users. I always suggest that small businesses start with a modest $100 budget and run a test campaign.

But you don’t need to advertise. Try to get existing local customers to follow you on your social channels. Provide interesting content and in turn your updates may get exposure to local friends and family who are followers of your followers.

5 Facts about Milwaukee you probably didn't know:

1. We invented the typewriter.
Christopher Latham Sholes invented the QWERTY typewriter, and he did it right here in Milwaukee. After the inventor moved to the city to write for a newspaper, he created a "typewriting machine," now known as the typewriter.

2: Downtown's skywalk is unlike any other.
The skywalk that crosses over the Milwaukee River is the only skywalk that exists over boat traffic.

3. We have the oldest certified bowling alley.
Holler House is a great place to grab a drink, but you can also roll a strike at the oldest
bowling alley in the U.S.

4. Theodore Roosevelt was shot here.
Sad, but true; during a speech in 1916, former president Teddy Roosevelt was shot in the chest at point-blank range. The assassination was not successful, due to a glasses case and manuscript in his chest pocket. Roosevelt then went on to finish the speech, with the bullet still in him.

5. There's a lake under our city.
Some know that Milwaukee was built on swampland, but there is actually a lake underneath the city! Lake Emily is located under the old Northwestern Mutual home office, and we're working hard to preserve it. Workers check the basement regularly and add water when needed.
