For many family businesses in Wisconsin, it makes sense to keep leadership within the family. Yet when only 23% of family businesses feel their next generation is ready for CEO roles, many are starting to shift to non-family CEOs.

Further, 75% of family businesses switching to non-family CEOs don't plan to switch back.
Still, many families are hesitant to trust newcomers and disrupt business dynamics. Aspects like family unification, strong governance and clean handoffs are necessities when bringing in leadership outside of the family.

"It really comes down to, again, the family unity, the family agreement, the family values, the family conversations of what does this mean for our business and how are we going to approach it and what is our mindset as a family in terms of the situation," said Sherry Herwig, director of the Wisconsin Family Business Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

In the end, it's less about finding the perfect CEO and more about the family doing the prep work first.
