Katherine O'Brien (The Ice Cream Bike Lady) was working as a Marketing and Brand Manager in Baltimore when she noticed a gap nobody had filled: the Inner Harbor was packed with people every summer and there was no ice cream anywhere nearby. She couldn't afford a food truck, but a bike made sense.

She saved $4,000 from her paychecks, got a city permit and launched Cream Cruiser in 2015 for a total of $8,500 — tripling her investment in the first summer.

The bike's advantage over a truck: it goes everywhere. Parks, campuses, indoor venues, waterfronts. Because all products are handmade and pre-packaged, she can serve thousands of guests without long lines.

In 2019 she quit her day job and invested in growth — then the pandemic wiped out every event she depended on. She pivoted to shipping Build Your Own Ice Cream Sandwich Kits via UPS, saved the business and kept her employees paid.

Katherine eventually tried wholesaling and found the margins too thin and the focus too scattered. She refocused on large-scale catering — corporate and college events for 500 to 2,500 guests — and has grown revenue while keeping overhead steady.

Her advice: just start. Progress comes from action, not overthinking.
