Last month, Big Spirit had the honor of attending the annual Great Lakes Tribal Public Health Conference in Oneida, Wisconsin.

This gathering is always meaningful to us. After many years of partnering with the Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Epidemiology Center, attending the conference feels a little like reconnecting with family. We enjoyed seeing Mandy Christensen and Gary Hanke again, along with so many Tribal leaders, health professionals, and partners doing important work throughout Indian Country.

We also had the opportunity to meet new people and organizations committed to strengthening Tribal public health, advancing Indigenous wellness, and making a difference in Native communities.
Big Spirit is proud to play a small role in supporting this important work. We encourage you to learn more about the Great Lakes Area Tribal Health Board and its efforts to increase access, awareness, advocacy, and funding for health programs and services supporting Great Lakes Area Tribes.

Join us in honoring National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day, on September 30th. This day is a powerful reminder of the resilience and strength of American Indian communities and the ongoing impact of the Indian boarding school system.

In the 19th century, Indian residential schools aimed to assimilate Indian children into Euro-American ways, forcibly separating them from their families and culture. The effects are still felt today, and we must remember this history.

On this day, people wear an orange shirt to stand in solidarity and support the rights of American Indian youth. Our youth deserve to celebrate their cultural heritage and learn their history accurately. Let's build a brighter future together.

In the past, Big Spirit collaborated with the National American Boarding School Healing Collation to create a one-of-a-kind design and produce apparel worn at events across the country to bring further awareness of this past injustice.

The graphic for the shirts used elements from the artwork of American Indian artist Marlena Myles to create the unique design.
