We’ve been working on something “inter”stellar!🌌

Last week we hosted the International Dark Sky Discovery Center at Split Rock for a sneak peek at their exhibits in production! We all had a blast testing exciting AV interactives created in partnership with Winikur Productions, then we headed to Colorado to test an immersive storytelling experience onsite at The Elumenati.

The International Dark Sky Discovery Center's mission is to educate visitors on the importance of Dark Skies for people and wildlife. The exhibit will inspire visitors to take action to preserve Dark Skies in their lives and communities!🦇

More looks behind the scenes to come soon! For the ultimate inside scoop on the exhibits, stop by Booth 607 at the ASTC Conference September 17-18 and check out the Celestial Navigation dome for yourself. It'll be the star of the show! ✨

Lichen, lava rocks, and changing landscapes await in the newest exhibit on the North Shore!🌊

On July 11th, the redesigned Sugarloaf Cove Nature Center opened its doors to the public once again! Inside the reimagined nature center, visitors discover the geologic, ecological, and human histories of the North Shore and understand their role in the story, too!

🌋Take geologic phenomena into your own hands with interactives on active eruptions, glaciers, and mountain formation!
🪨Dig into the details with sculptural recreations of the lava rock formations and lichen you'll find on the trails!
🪏Connect with the human history along the shoreline, from early land use to modern management, and what you can do to help!
🌳Head into the woods with a diorama depicting the multiple forest types and common species shaped by the coastal climate!

Acting as an introduction to the North Shore, Sugarloaf Cove Nature Center’s new exhibit inspires visitors to think about the landscape they are about to explore in new ways!

We are mourning the loss of our friend, colleague, and former coworker Kate Sutton-Johnson.

In her four years at Split Rock, Kate served as exhibit designer and eventually creative director, guiding projects ranging from the JFK assassination to contemporary agriculture.

But more than that, Kate left an impact on us. She inspired our pursuit of cutting-edge design, deeper interpretation, and flawless fabrication. She built lasting friendships, made us laugh, and supported us when we cried.

Kate is gone too soon, but we are all better for having known her.

We’re holding Kate, her husband, family, and all of her friends in our thoughts.

New exhibits making history in South Dakota👏

On July 1st, Split Rock Studios celebrated the debut of the first two new exhibit areas at the South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center: the 'Welcome Gallery' and the 'What is History' Gallery.

Founded even before South Dakota achieved statehood, the South Dakota State Historical Society has long been dedicated to preserving the state’s heritage. The new exhibits at the museum, located in Pierre, illustrate how historians, museum curators, and archivists piece together the past and invite every visitor to become a student of South Dakotan history!📖

We can't wait to share the remaining exhibit galleries once installed later this year. Stay tuned as we bring the rest of this museum to life!🏛️

As America celebrated its 250th birthday this past weekend, Split Rock Studios also proudly celebrated the grand opening of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in Medora, North Dakota.

Throughout the project, we focused on crafting custom casework, handling all loaned and TRPL collection artifacts, and creating specialized mounts based on each object’s conservator requirements. Split Rock Studios was entrusted with one-of-a-kind pieces essential to telling Theodore Roosevelt's story. From some of the most valuable items in the Smithsonian collection to pieces previously held at the White House, our expert team delivered the highest standards of care and craftsmanship through custom patterning, precision mount fabrication, and meticulous installation.

Read more about our work on the project here: https://splitrockstudios.com/theodore-roosevelt-presidential-library/

Split Rock Studios was honored to be part of a talented exhibit fabrication team led by Dimensional Innovations and the full project team, including Snøhetta and JLG Architects, Local Projects, JE Dunn Construction, Future of StoryTelling, RLMG, Cortina Productions, Redglass Pictures, VLS, and Electrosonic.

Take me out to the ball game⚾️

It's always a great time to chat about history, exhibits, and, of course, baseball, especially with our fellow museum people!

We recently had the pleasure of hosting a group of museum colleagues at a St. Paul Saints game while they were in town for a leadership course. It was a great chance to share how the City of Baseball Museum exhibit tells the story of baseball's different eras in Saint Paul, from the St. Paul Sandlot of the 1800s to the Saints who now play at CHS Field!

Between cheering on the Saints, making new friends, and sharing the AASLH award-winning exhibit at the City of Baseball Museum (including recent additions we've made), the evening was a home run!

A few weeks ago, Split Rock Studios joined Waḳan Ṭípi Awanyankapi and the City of Saint Paul to celebrate the grand opening of the Wakan Tipi Center, a Native-led cultural and environmental interpretive center. Through Dakota art, audio interactives, and contemporary displays, the exhibits share the interconnected history, ecology, and cultural significance of this site from a Dakota perspective.

We are honored to serve as the exhibit fabricators for this project in our community.

You can visit Wakan Tipi from Wednesday through Friday, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm.
