Let’s talk about signs.
And no, we’re not talking about the 2002 thriller.

Signs are everywhere—traffic signs, for sale signs, political signs, garage sale signs, and of course those wayfinding signs you were absolutely going to mention in the comments (we see you).

With all those signs around, it’s easy to assume they can go just about anywhere. But there are a few important rules about where they can be placed.

Here’s a quick reference guide:
Can I put my sign in the public right-of-way?
No. This includes boulevards, streets, and sidewalks.

I’m having a garage sale—can I tape my sign to a box, weigh it down with a rock, and place it on a busy corner? Or can I tape or staple a sign to City-owned street light post?
Also no.

Can I lean a sign against a traffic signal to advertise an event?
Still no.

We get it—when your garage sale items are carefully organized with color-coded stickers and clearly labeled “firm on price,” you want people to find your sale. But sign placement rules exist to keep things safe, visible, and orderly for everyone.

One more thing: we’re not out actively looking for sign violations. However, if complaints are submitted about signs placed in the public right-of-way, they may be removed by Code Enforcement staff and brought to the Minot Police Department for safekeeping, where they can be picked up during normal business hours.
