SUBSTACK SECURITY

One of my clients, who has a Substack account, asked me why one of his followers had to put in a code, sent to her email, to make a comment.

Here is the reason from Substack: "Substack prompts for a sign-in or verification code to comment because you must be logged into an active Substack profile to leave a comment. This one-time code (OTP) replaces traditional passwords, acting as a security measure to verify your identity and prevent spam or bot activity on the platform."

All the platforms are tightening up on security. Now that hackers have learned to use AI, the attacks have increased exponentially. Sad for all!

HOW TO THROW AWAY $96+

I bought an extra, black, large-size ink cartridge from Walmart last summer so I would have a backup when I needed it. Good planning, right?

Wrong! When I tried to turn the orange gadget on the cartridge for use, it malfunctioned and I now have a new, Rorschach blotches on my carpet.

So, I went to Walmart to turn it in for a replacement. NOPE, the return on an ink cartridge only lasts for 30 days. I thought it was possibly a Walmart thing, but Best Buy is 15 days!

Website owners add captcha's to their online forms to help keep spammer and scammer software from filling out the form. Captcha's have a sense of trust, which is why scammers also use them to collect data from internet users and also to get their malware into their software.

THIS WOMAN FOLLOWED AN INDUSTRIAL CLIENT
She's a 10, right? Hubba, Hubba! Of course, she is very interested in heavy machinery. What a great addition to their Facebook followers.

Here is an edited version of what I wrote to my client:
"there is a type of people who will Follow/Like your page. They are the scammers, s*x seekers, mashers and other undesirables. Your page has picked up one of those. You can tell they are a problem when you go to their page, they have photos of themselves like you would post on a dating site. Their page may even have some political or thoughtful posts, but it's the photos that give them away.

The reason that this is a problem, and not just an annoyance, is that they are trying to get people to click on their name/like/comment to go to their page. In the case of an industrial site, like yours, they are after high $ value men."

DESIGN SHOULDN'T FORCE OUT USABILITY

From the view of a web developer, the work graphic artists can make the project shine, or make the project fail. If the project starts with the graphic artist and not the message and the market, it's likely to fall into the failed project pile.

Sometimes graphic artists make a website as unusable as these little round tables we encountered at a Starbucks in Albuquerque. If they don't want you to come back, this is a great design.

A well-experienced graphic artist understands that the process and end use of web development is very different from the process and end use of printed materials.

1. Brixey theme - hasn't been updated since 2017
- has its own style sheet
- has a place to override its styles

2. WP Bakery plugin
- has its own place to override styles

Besides the development overhead, the load time overhead makes the site sluggish.
