Are you somebody who spells the eight-night Jewish festival of lights celebration with the letter H and two K’s or CH and one K?

In related news, Hamilton star Daveed Diggs and composer Jonathan Snipes of the group Clipping just put out “Puppy for Hanukkah” for Disney, and we’re lovin’ the hip hop meets klezmer mashup, not to mention Disney a) actively recognized the Jewish festival, and b) did it in a way that celebrates multiculturalism on so many levels, from the distinct musical styles, to the actors in the video, to Diggs being Black and Jewish.

I recently had a chance to volunteer for the NYC-based homeless assistance program Backpacks For The Street, which was launched by the 501c3 public charity Together Helping Others, Inc. To date, the program, founded by Jeffrey Newman () and Jayson Conner, has distributed 13,524 backpacks, of which 9,628 COVID packs and 17,839 masks and hand sanitizer were distributed since March 12, 2020.

“Everything about the backpack is about hope, it’s a band-aid,” Newman said. “We understand that it’s not going to cure homelessness, we don’t pretend it’s going to cure homelessness. But it does say to somebody, 'Hey, you know what? We care.'”

In difficult times, these glimmers of hope and light shine even more brightly. Please consider volunteering, donating, or sponsoring Backpacks For The Street's efforts.
