There’s something about the mountains that brings us back to who we are.
Rachael is deep in training for her 100-mile race, which starts this Friday. The kids have new bows in their hands, learning and preparing for hunting season. We’re spending long days outside, moving through the mountains, getting stronger, slowing down, and doing hard things together.
But for us, LIU Adventure has never really just been about the adventure.
It’s about what the adventure builds.
Discipline. Patience. Confidence. Respect for the land. Learning how to be uncomfortable and keep going. Learning that getting good at something takes time, repetition, failure, and a willingness to try again.
And more than anything, it’s about our kids being part of it.
We don’t want them watching us live our lives from the sidelines. We want them beside us. Carrying their bows. Climbing the mountains. Watching their mom prepare to run 100 miles through them. Learning where their food comes from. Learning to respect animals and wild places. Seeing firsthand what it looks like to work toward something that isn’t easy.
These mountains have given our family a lot.
They’ve challenged us, humbled us, strengthened us, and given us a place to reconnect when life gets loud.
And this Friday, Rachael gets to put months of that work to the test at the San Juan Softie 100.
100 miles through the San Juan Mountains. Around 19,000 feet of climbing. Our kids will get to watch their mom step to the starting line and do something incredibly hard that she chose to work for.
We’ll be out there supporting her along the way, and you can follow her live throughout the race here:

This is LIU Adventure.
Not just where we go.
It’s how we’re choosing to raise our family.
