In 1997, a book landed in my hands that I have not been able to stop thinking about since.
My family and I had just moved to New York City so I could work in radio, and in my media circles everyone was passing around The Fourth Turning by William Strauss and Neil Howe. Their idea was simple and unsettling. History moves in cycles of about eighty years, and every cycle ends the same way: a Crisis that tears the old order apart, followed by a rebirth that builds the next one. The last one was the Great Depression and World War II.
That idea never left me. And by 2020, watching neighbors stop waving and families stop speaking over politics, I could not shake the feeling that the next Crisis had arrived. So I started writing.
The result is my novel, WHISPERS FROM THE BATTLEFIELD.
It follows a historian who walks the ground at Gettysburg and begins to hear the voices of the men who died there. More than 600,000 Americans lost their lives in that war, almost all of them certain the other side was the enemy. The dead have a warning, and it is not about 1863. It is about us.
Here is how I am sharing it. Starting this week, I am releasing the book one chapter at a time, beginning with the Prologue, with a new chapter every week leading up to the full release this September. You can read it for free.
I made a short trailer too. Watch it, read the Prologue, and come along for the ride.
The past is warning us. The only question is whether we will listen.
