We don't do a lot of e-commerce SEO nowadays, but we do still have some tips for you.

Did you know that Shopify themes generally create duplicate product pages and default to having their collection pages link to those duplicates?

You probably didn't, because the duplicates generally just redirect back to the main product page.

Why? Who knows!

But it's pretty easy to fix and goes a long way toward improving your site's crawlability.

Freddie Chatt wrote a really good blog on how to do this.

Multiple H1 tags are one of the most common, and easiest to fix, issues we come across in SEO audits. These tags are Google's first indicator when it comes to what a page is about, and you should only have one of them on each page.

You can clean this up yourself in your CMS or get in touch with us if you need help!

Be careful who you hire.

This is a newer client I'm working with. Their last SEO created around 20 "service area" pages to target surrounding cities. The only problem is they used identical content on all 20 pages.

Google refers to these types of pages as "doorway pages" and has strict rules against them. Last month, when Google updated its spam policy, this site's traffic began to decline.

Sure enough, a quick look at their Google Search Console shows that their service area pages stopped receiving any traffic around that time. 50% of them are in the "discovered not indexed" status, meaning Google has decided not to even crawl them.

My rule with service area pages is that each one must be unique and should only exist if we're able to identify why the client's service is unique in that area. Otherwise, we don't fool with them.

For these guys, there is a solid chance Google will continue to ignore pages on their "service-area" subdirectory, even if we update them. The solution? We'll just have to delete them, focus on their primary city, and slowly build out unique service area pages on a new subdirectory once they are out of the penalty box.

Anyway, long story short, be weary of who you work with. If an SEO pitches you a quick path to success, they're probably doing something shady. Slow and steady always wins the SEO race

A local meal delivery service I began working with in October 2023.

Here's an overview of how we did it:

1.) Fixed Service Area Pages

Their service area pages were all duplicates of each other, with just a few words changed to indicate the city they were meant to represent. The content was pretty thin as well.

I updated them so that each was distinct and added more information about the dietitians they worked with, their vacuum-sealing license, and the diet accommodations they were willing to make. This enhanced the overall authority of those pages and boosted their local results.

2.) Fixed URL Issues

Some of their pages had clearly been copied from others, and they didn't always fix the URLs. I went through and optimized all affected URLs.

3.) Authority-Building Blogs

I found a good niche for their blogging efforts. I won't give it away per se, but it wasn't related directly to meal prepping and was more focused on health and nutrition. Many of these blogs were optimized for featured snippets, helping them gain more exposure at the top of the Google search results page.

Three Low-Effort Ways to Get Backlinks For Your Local Business

1. Sponsor a local event or charity:

You can find these opportunities by using Google search operators. For example, if you google "kentucky inurl:sponsor" (without quotation marks), you'll find various businesses, events, and nonprofits looking for sponsorship. Spend some time on their sites and see if they have sponsor pages that link out to their supporters.

Remember, when analyzing links on their sites, right-click the link and select "inspect." What you want to see is an href value that DOESN'T say "nofollow."

2. Join a local organization:

See if there are local organizations for people in your line of work. For example, if you're an HVAC contractor, a simple Google search for "kentucky HVAC Association" leads to tons of organizations you may be able to join.

Surf their sites and see if they build out member pages or have a page containing links to the contractors that belong to their organization. Of course, you'll want to research them to ensure they're legit.

3. Business directories:

This is probably the easiest option, and there are tools (like Bright Local and SemRush) that do almost all of the work for you. The catch here is a.) these aren't the most valuable links, and b.) you need to ensure the name, address, phone number, and business hour details are the same across all your directory listings and Google Business Profile.
