Your Google Business Profile might be the single most important piece of free marketing your business has — and most businesses are barely using it.
When someone searches for what you do in your area, your Google Business Profile is often the first thing they see. Before your website. Before your social media. Before anything else.
And here's the good news — you can make it significantly better in about 15 minutes. Here's how:
1. Claim and verify it (if you haven't already).
Go to business.google.com. If you haven't claimed your listing, do it now. You can't control what shows up about your business if you don't own the profile.
2. Fill out every single field.
Business name, address, phone, website, hours, service area, business category — all of it. Google rewards completeness. If a field exists and you left it blank, you're leaving visibility on the table.
3. Pick the right primary category.
This one matters more than most people realize. Your primary category is one of the biggest factors in how Google decides when to show your business. Be specific — "Family Law Attorney" performs better than just "Lawyer."
4. Write a real business description.
You get 750 characters. Use them. Describe what you do, who you serve, and what makes you different. Include your key services naturally — don't stuff it with keywords.
5. Add photos — real ones.
Businesses with photos get 42% more requests for directions and 35% more clicks to their website. Add photos of your team, your space, your work, and your products. Skip the stock images.
6. Turn on messaging.
Let people message you directly from your profile. It's one more way for a potential customer to reach out without friction.
7. Post updates regularly.
Most businesses don't know you can post directly to your Google profile — almost like social media. Share updates, offers, events, and news. It signals to Google that your business is active.
8. Ask for reviews (and respond to every one).
Reviews are one of the top ranking factors for local search. Ask happy customers to leave one, and respond to every review — good or bad. It shows you're paying attention.
That's it. Fifteen minutes. And the impact on your local search visibility can be significant.
