-What is Copywriting?-
Don’t get tripped up on how it sounds! Copywriting is a separate thing entirely from copyrighting©, the legal act of protecting intellectual property. Instead, we’re talking about a writer who creates text to communicate an idea to a specific audience. A copywriter is someone who writes copy.
-What is Copy? As in “and Paste?”-
Copy is the text for promotional, marketing, and informational material. It can take many forms, from blogs and social media captions to flight instruction manuals and website text.
-What Makes a Copywriter?-
Three skills are essential for copywriting: writing tight, being flexible, and assessing the audience.
Being concise is the biggest challenge to a copywriter. They might write an article and then condense it into 50 words or less for a social media caption. Consolidating the word count without leaving out information can be tricky. Writing tight takes practice, but is invaluable once mastered.
As a copywriter, it’s typical to get jobs and assignments on a variety of topics. The writer doesn’t need niche expertise for their writing. Instead, they take the knowledge from an expert in the field and distill it into an easier to digest written form. With flexibility, a copywriter is able to work in any industry or field.
The last aspect of copywriting is knowing the audience. Should the tone be formal or informal? What are the audience demographics? Do they have a basic or complex understanding of the topic? Answering these questions creates an easy way to effectively communicate with the audience.
Copywriting is first and foremost about communicating well. A copywriter’s job is to get information to you, the reader, sometimes without you even noticing.
