It’s hard to believe it’s been 25 years.
I was a freshman at MTSU on September 11, 2001. I had an early class that morning and remember coming back to my dorm, turning on the TV and watching everything unfold. I called a buddy of mine, and we just sat there watching it together, trying to make sense of what we were seeing.
It’s strange the little things you remember from moments like that.
Ryan Adams’ “New York, New York” had just come out, and Gold was released a few weeks later. That song and that album will probably always take me back to the fall of 2001.
I remember baseball returning, too. Watching the Yankees play again and seeing New York begin to find some sense of normalcy. Sports and music seem insignificant compared to what happened that day, but looking back, they were part of how we processed it all.
Twenty-five years later, I can still picture that dorm room and that TV.
So much has changed since then, but September 11 is one of those days that never really feels that far away.
Remembering those who lost their lives, the families who carried that loss, and everyone who stepped forward to help in the days, months and years that followed.
