Yesterday, I wrote on why you need a marketing professional. Here's another reason. A comment, often attributed to John Wanamaker, states: "Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don't know which half."

A true point. But we can learn two lessons from that.

1) John Wanamaker was an amazingly successful businessman, in no small part due to his marketing. Yet 1/2 his advertising was wasted!!! In today's society, people would be less concerned with his success than the half he wasted! Can you see the epic fail here?

2) A marketing professional will help you maximize your investment. There will always be some waste. But the marketing professional will help you reduce that and pinpoint your message and medium. And that could make all the difference.

GSA's first Post...yay!

Two questions: 1) Do you spend time focused on your marketing that could be used for other aspects of your business? 2) Is your formal education in something other than "marketing?" If the answer to either question is "yes", than you need a marketing agency. This is not one of those, "well maybe I do" answers. You need it, and if you don't get one as soon as possible, you are doing a disservice to your business. Here's why:

1) Marketing agencies are cheap, and in some cases, (gasp!) free! In our case, GSA will have at least two meetings with you free of charge, and analyze your marketing with suggested solutions, also free of charge!

2) While you may have to pay for some of the creative charges (TV, Radio, Cable, Print, Billboard, etc), you will never have to pay a marketing agency a fee to place the time! In the vast majority of the cases, the media will pay the marketing agencies fees!! Again, you only pay for creative, and sometimes that fee is waived or discounted!

3) Do you truly have the time for strong marketing? You can get a good idea for what you want to say or show, but the ex*****on is very time consuming! There are many media reps for each medium; they all have convincing stories why you should use their particular outlet. Do you have time for that?

4) Marketing is an honorable profession, similar to medicine, law, banking, etc. However, for some reason business owners think they know how to market. That would be like saying, "I know the appendix is on the right side....I can take it out myself!" Or, "I don't need a lawyer...I watch Law and Order on TV and read a lot of John Grisham books!" As the saying goes, "A man who is his own lawyer has a fool for a client." So, you were saying you do your own marketing! :)

There are many more reasons, but these are enough. If you spend more than minimal time on your marketing or if you don't have formal education in marketing, get a Marketing Agency. Not tomorrow, not next week. Now. At worst, its free and can't hurt. At best, it could be the key to your success in the next 365 days.
