Hearts were full, and faces glowed with gratitude after last night's showing of the documentary Rooted in Joy at the 24th Annual Oakland International Film Festival (OIFF). Some stories challenge stereotypes; others completely reframe the narrative. Rooted in Joy does exactly that.
Through the powerful work of Fern A. Stroud, Founder of Black Vines, this documentary reminds us of something that is often overlooked: Black life is not defined solely by struggle, resilience, or survival. It is also filled with joy, celebration, connection, and happiness. Fern is deeply committed to creating spaces where Black joy is visible, honored, and experienced, and sharing through the 'vines' is a unique and creative way to make it happen. Through Black Vines and now Rooted in Joy, Fern is helping shift the lens, ensuring stories of happiness, community, love, and belonging are part of the narrative. From the Bay to Belize, Black Vines is grounded in joy and happiness. Period!
Thank you, David Roach, for continuing to share your vision as the Founder of OIFF, and thank you, Fern, for leading with purpose and for showing that joy itself can be a powerful form of storytelling.
