When I was in school for graphic design, I was also working full time, and at home full time with my son. I would go to work at night when my partner got off, and "sleep" during the day when I could.
I didn't put as much creative energy into my projects as I wanted to because I just didn't have the energy to spare. I was focused on getting a good grade and not stretching my creative muscles. I had to prioritize.
This summer is the season for redesigning. As a side project to grow my skills, I'm taking a look at all the projects I did in school, the ones I wasn't in a hurry to include in my portfolio, and redesigning them.
First up, is my local farm project.
Initially, this project was just to design a poster for a local farmers' market. But as I sat down to redesign I realized I could do a lot with the project, and decided to start completely from scratch with a logo (re)design first.
When doing a logo design, I start with compiling examples of logos that the client (or me in this case) likes. This allows me to get an idea of style.
After that, I typically rough draw a couple examples in procreate and then take those examples to Adobe Illustrator to create initial mocks. I know a lot of people use hand-drawn mocks to show clients, but I like to take them into Illustrator first because I feel like it gives a better example of what's to come. This also means I don't put a lot of energy into drawing, they're mostly just for my own reference.
Here's an example of how rough sketches become first mocks. There's still a lot that I plan to go back and tweak, but this gives me a great starting point.
I am considering taking a vote to decide on which logo to move forward on as the final product. Do you have a favorite?
