Sea turtle nesting season is underway on Florida's beaches. 🥚🏖️

Each year, loggerheads, leatherbacks, and green turtles return to our shores to lay their eggs, continuing a cycle that has played out for millions of years.

If you're heading to the beach this summer, remember to fill in holes, pack out trash, and give nesting turtles plenty of space. 🐢

The Green Sea Turtle 🥬

They are known for their radiant, beautiful and bright in colors. Greens get their name from their diet. They eat lots of seaweed and plants although their diet is not limited.
The Greens face many issues on land and water. They have been listed as a threatened species. The just recently moved off the endangered list and are doing positive as far as numbers go.
Greens are symmetrical swimmers. The butterfly stroke if you will. Greens are known to leave quite an impression on the beach when they come to nest. Making it a challenge for permitted patrollers to find the clutch.
Another fun fact about most marine turtles is their ability to stay underwater for long periods of time. Sea turtles are air-breathing reptiles that have lungs, so they regularly surface to breathe. Sea turtles spend a majority of their time underwater, so they must be able to hold their breath for long periods. Typically one will stay under for 5-40 minutes but not uncommon to sleep under water for up to 7 hours.

Penny has just arrived at our rescue, and we are already smitten with this sweet girl. Rescued from a kill shelter, she is a gentle, loving soul who simply wants to be close to her people.

New situations can make her a little shy at first, but once she feels safe, her affectionate personality shines. Belly rubs, ear scratches, and cuddles are her favorite.

With her kind heart, soulful eyes, and endless love to give, Penny is ready for a fresh start. We can’t wait for you to get to know her.
