Today, I’m thinking of the woman behind the name.

Odessa Design exists because of my great grandmother, Hazel Odessa Pesto—born on this day in 1904.

She was strength, grace, and resilience long before those words became part of brand language. The kind of woman who built a life with her hands, carried herself with quiet confidence, and left a legacy that still echoes generations later.

Naming my business after her wasn’t just about honoring where I come from—it’s about carrying forward her spirit in everything we create. Thoughtful. Enduring. Intentional.

Years ago, in high school, I created a Thanksgiving dinner menu in my calligraphy class as a gift for my Nan, who always hosted our holiday meal. She proudly displayed the menu on her kitchen door every Thanksgiving for years.

If you don’t know (and many won’t), “Green Sh*t” is Pistachio Pudding. My Nan made it one year to shake up her traditional Thanksgiving menu. The dish was initially met with some grumbles, hence its nick name, but she continued to make it year after year.

35 years later, Green Sh*t is still on our Thanksgiving table.

This Thanksgiving, we are grateful for family, for traditions that grow with us, and for the little surprises that make every celebration uniquely ours.
