CCO Dave Damman captured this shot at the Zulu parade last Tuesday. Here’s what he had to say about street photography:
“Vivian Maier, Gary Winogrand, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Gordon Parks, Diane Arbus—just some of history’s most celebrated and prolific street photographers. Capturing humanity in its most enduring and honest moments. Moments that are frozen for eternity, preserved for generations to come.
Cartier-Bresson called it the ‘decisive moment.’ The split-second, spontaneous intersection of action, emotion, and geometric composition—the perfect, unposed, and uncropped, instant to click the shutter. It is a “simultaneous recognition” of an event’s significance and its visual form.
Now with millions upon millions of images being captured by millions upon millions of cameras at any moment of the day, the ‘decisive moment’ has become that much rarer. There is no darkroom. There is no proof sheet to edit. Just an endless supply of iCloud storage.
I wonder how many undiscovered “decisive moments” sit in those data centers, lost forever.”
