In the stages of loss and grief, people go from denial to anger to barganing to acceptance. In our loss of a majority middle class, the wealthy use divide and conquer tactics to short circuit us at anger and redirect that anger from themselves and toward powerless scapegoats. That is why they offer no solutions to poverty. All they offer is hate.
Last night far-right activists tried to intimidate asylum seekers in Clondalkin by protesting where they live. Local anti-racist activists said enough is enough and came out in solidarity with migrants and asylum seekers in our community.
The far-right has nothing to offer but hate. They are not the people who are fighting for housing, healthcare, education for all. Last night they attacked women and trade unionists who were standing in solidarity with asylum seekers.
Far-right protesters wearing balaclavas tried to intimidate the anti-racists by throwing eggs, verbally abusing counter-protesters and throwing women to the ground.
This kind of violence is not new. The same people attacking anti-racists last night have been travelling around the country spreading their hate. They have intimidated pharmacists and librarians, burnt books and most worryingly burnt down the tents of homeless asylum seekers.
This kind of violence and hate should not go unchallenged. I would like to call on anyone who stands against far-right hate and lies in Clondalkin to come together and help organise a refugee welcome rally in Clondalkin in the coming weeks.
Finally, I think it is vital that anyone who wants to stand up to the far right join the Cost Of Living Demonstration on Saturday, October 7th, 1pm at Parnell Sq. and point the finger of blame for inequality and poverty in our communities straight at the government, where it belongs.
