’s use of AR differs from the usual “social filter fun” that we’re accustomed to seeing on , , and Snapchat. Instead, Pinterest uses the technology to power its shopping experience, “AR Try On”!

Launched at the beginning of this year and taking inspiration from the likes of ’s AR camera, Pinterest’s “Try On for Home Décor” allows users to virtually place items from U.S. retailers in their homes with the Pinterest Lens camera. 🪑➡️🏠 Pinterest hopes its AR features will be an intuitive bridge for the gap between virtual commerce and reality.

But this doesn’t mean Pinterest has avoided AR selfie filters altogether; the platform was actually an early adopter of the tech! “Try On” launched in 2020 with a focus on testing makeup products, which was made possible by skin tone ranges and computer-vision-powered recommendations. 💄
