Today in NYC History: Hip Hop was officially "born" on August 11, 1973, during a back-to-school dance party held at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx. During the party, DJ Kool Herc used two turntables to switch back and forth repeatedly between two copies of the same record, extending a short drum break — inventing what is now known as the "break beat".
