Strictly Facts: A Guide A Guide to Caribbean History & Culture

Indian Arrival Day in the Caribbean marks the beginning of a profound and complex history shaped by migration, labor, survival, and cultural transformation. Following the end of slavery in the 19th century, the system of indentured servitude brought over half a million Indians to the Caribbean between 1838 and 1917. Recruited under contracts that promised wages and opportunity, many instead faced harsh plantation conditions, restricted mobility, and social marginalization, conditions that, in many ways, echoed the coercion of earlier labor systems. This system was not unique to the Caribbean. Indian indentured laborers were transported across the globe to places like Mauritius, Fiji, and South Africa.

In the Caribbean, Indo-Caribbean communities have indelibly shaped the region’s cultural, political, and economic landscape, from language and religion to food, music, and national identity. Today, Indian Arrival Day is both a commemoration and a reflection that honors the resilience of those who endured indenture and recognizes the enduring legacies carried forward by their descendants across the Caribbean and its diaspora.
