IT’S MAGIC – what is it about the beach that immediately engages the attention of children, like this group of kids at St. Pete beach…?

"TELL ME A STORY"

This LinkedIn post by Amanda Smith is spot-on and echoes the advice we give our clients when producing short videos: lead with stories about the people you are helping.

"A small nonprofit had to raise $3,000 for new office chairs.

It was the most "boring" appeal they'd ever written. They sent it with low expectations.

It funded in 24 hours. Why?

They didn't ask for chairs.

They asked donors to give a domestic abuse survivor a dignified, comfortable place to sit while she met with her counselor for the first time.

The story wasn't about the furniture. It was about the person who would use it. It connected a tangible, simple item to a feeling of safety and respect. It proved that there are no boring fundraising campaigns. Only boring stories."

“OUR WORK IS THE BEST MARKETING” – is what many nonprofits tell themselves. Unfortunately, that is simply not true, as evidenced by so many of our clients referring to themselves as their community’s “best kept secret.”

If you have any doubts about this, do take a minute to read about what happened a few years ago along the Texas Arkansas border when, despite a boom in renewable energy projects accompanied by positive economic growth, voters, apparently unaware of how this occurred, failed to vote for the politicians responsible.

Though the article’s emphasis is primarily politics, it’s not hard to connect the dots and conclude that a major factor in the failure of voters to reward those who delivered results was due to an assumption that the results spoke for themselves.

We finally have an answer to the age-old question: “If a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it, does it make a sound?”

No… it does not.

AUTUMN SPLENDOR — at the iconic Mohonk Mountain House. For those not familiar, this stunning resort opened in 1869 when twin brothers, Alfred and Albert Smiley, decided to retire from teaching and become innkeepers. The Mountain House may be seen at the far end of the lake. The looming Sky Top Tower, which can be seen for miles around and is the defining landmark of the area, was dedicated to Albert Smiley in 1923.
