We’ve discussed Boomers, Millennials and Gen Z.

Our conversation continues next week… as we transition to GEN X.

As a sneak peak - if generations were horses, these horses would represent exactly how each generation looks at posting to their social media feeds.

Growing up with social media, and still staunchly devoted to photographing and videoing everything from weekend brunches, vacations and other life adventures - their greatest dental needs should come as no surprise.

MILLENNIAL TOP DENTAL NEEDS ARE:

COSMETIC CARE
Millennials care a great deal about their appearance. This should not be a shock, considering how much time they spend on social media. Botox, Fillers and other cosmetic care needs rank high - and they are willing to spend top dollar for these services.

CLEAR ALIGNERS
Experts have dubbed a trend “the Invisalign effect,” where millennials see corrective dental care as something that can continue into adulthood rather than only being for children in junior high or young adults in high school. Meaning, they have postponed it, not prioritizing it in their youth - making it a greater priority for them now.

PERIODONTAL CARE
As we saw only 30% of Millennials visit dentists regularly, making this a resulting necessity for them. In addition, teeth sensitivity & grinding rank high in Millennials. Jaw clenching is a contributing factor to bone loss or periodontal disease that affects bone supporting structures around teeth. As you know, because it’s a chronic and non painful disease, Millennials may not even know they have periodontitis.

This may be shocking, or at least it was to us. Considering advancements in dentistry, how could Millennials have worse teeth than their parents?

The greatest contributing factor is that Millennials living untraditional lives have untraditional priorities, and dental care has not ranked high amongst them. Only 30% of them visit dentists regularly.

Their diets are yet another contributing factor. For example, millennials rarely hit the daily recommendations for fruit and vegetable intake, and then they also eat replacements with fake sugars and other problematically synthetic foods.

Millennials are Conscious Capitalists, they not only aspire to financial wealth, but also intellectual, ecological, cultural, emotional and social wealth. Conscious Capitalists consider their impact on the planet and their local neighborhood.

Unlike Gen Z who prefer grittier off the cuff content, Millennials like well polished, glossy content. Their relationship to goods and services, is lifestyle oriented and aspirational. Fortunately, they have the financial resources to pay for those quality goods.

So to engage with them, craft offers that focus on the result or solution to their need. They should have an altruistic edge, and be social or planet conscious. Ad wise, make sure it pops - color and copy for the creative should look editorial.

Tune in later this week, as we discuss their greatest dental needs and what services are best to offer them.

By now you’ve probably heard this a million times. But Tik-Tok is the next and greatest frontier for marketing. ESPECIALLY for growing your practice with Gen Z.

BY THE NUMBERS:

- Gen Z spends 24-48 hours per month on TikTok. That’s ~5% of all awake time.
- 40% of Gen Z use TikTok for search instead of Google.
- 83% of Gen Z checks business on social media

COMBINE THAT WITH FACTS WE LEARNED IN PREVIOUS POSTS:

- This generation shops around, comparing and looking for the best deals
- They are persuaded by recommendations / reviews of past customers
- They are most interested in Preventive Care, Teeth Whitening & Clear Aligners

SO IF YOU’RE LOOKING TO GROW YOUR GEN Z AUDIENCE:

The best way to reach them, is to be available to them, where they are looking for you most. So it’s a combo of ACTIVE + PASSIVE marketing to grow with this age group:

- Organic Search (SEO your website to increase your organic rankings),
- Paid Search (Pay Per Click, so that you are at the top of the search list)
- Google My Business - Reputation Management (having great reviews)
- Tik-Tok content that drives relevancy to them, for types of procedures they need (remember they search using Tik-Tok)

We’ve got you more than covered on the above! Let us help you, before the other dental practices in your area catch on!

Gen Z is coming of age at a tumultuous time in US history. From early on in childhood facing the familial impacts of 9/11 & Recessions - to more recently political unrest, social and racial tensions, health and global pandemics. It has truly been a lot for this generation to process.

These factors in concert with the staple altruism of youth, are reflected in their values. They value authenticity, transparency and sincerity. They appreciate brands who reflect their own views and who get to the point, without a lot fluff.

SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO YOU AS A DENTIST?

As we mentioned earlier this week, Gen Z is coming to a neighborhood near you. They are a major source of new patient opportunities. They are graduating and entering the economy, moving out from their parents homes and looking for their own services.

SO TO GROW THIS NEW PATIENT GROUP, YOU’LL NEED TO:

1) Be mindful that their purchasing decisions are an expression of their values
2) Recognize they want to feel an emotional connection to the goods they are offered
3)Are attracted to sustainable products and are willing to pay more for them
4)As Digital natives they shop around, comparing and looking for best deals
5) Dislike celebrity endorsements, are more persuaded by recommendations /reviews
6) Value self-care and mental health (including cosmetic care)

AND REMEMBER - YOU WANT TO PLAY THE LONG GAME - EARN THEIR PATRONAGE NOW!

Because they are also likely to be loyal customers, if you don’t grow with this audience NOW, you risk it being trickier later. Also you don’t want to be the practices whose existing patient base is aging out. Though they may only be most interested in preventative care (ie lower production value) as their pocket books grow, so will the services they pursue.

01/19/2023

Gen Z have lived with their parents longer than previous generations (as a result of many factors including the pandemic). However, in 2021 54% lived at home, down to around 33% as of Nov of 2022. So they have clearly begun moving out - AND COMING TO A TOWN/CITY NEAR YOU.

Becoming financially independent - they will be in search of goods and services of their own. INCLUDING FINDING THE RIGHT DENTIST. It’s time to start growing your practice to include Gen Z.

THE TYPES OF TREATMENTS AND PROCEDURES THEY ARE MOST INTERESTED IN:

PREVENTATIVE CARE:
As you would expect preventative care is top of mind for this age group. Those under 25 view “preventing bad breath” (48.06%) and the “pressure to have white teeth” (43.69%) as influential.

TEETH WHITENING:
This pressure for having white teeth is driving Teeth Whitening as a TOP treatment for this generation. This is as a result of their lifestyle habits which began in middle school and high school - including to***co use (mostly va**ng), and extensive drinking of coffee and tea.

CLEAR ALIGNERS / ORTHODONTICS:
Remember this generation spans from middle school to graduating college. They do not want to be a brace-face especially as they are digital natives, with daily social media use. So clear aligners and the flexibility of when to wear or not wear them, is of great importance to them.

TUNE IN FOR MORE GREAT INSIGHTS THE REST OF THIS WEEK AS WE UNPACK GEN Z AND HOW TO REACH THEM.

Gen Z is the new frontier in Patient flow.
Graduating college and coming to a city near you, as new residents to that local,
they will be on the hunt for new services, including a need for a New Dentist.

So how do you snag them?

• They care less about luxury and aesthetic than other generations before them and are more focused on meaning and message.
• They look for brands who reflect their values and their beliefs.
• They are keen shoppers, with tighter budgets, looking for great return on spend.
• They gravitate toward content that is grittier, less polished and often humorous.
• They are tech forward, and digital natives. So your marketing tactics should reflect this - be sure you have chat widgets, and automated booking.
• They are mostly on social media and text, but not your usual haunts like instagram and facebook - look for them on snapchat and TikTok.

If you’re wondering, how the heck to tap into this new frontier…
Schedule a call with us, and we’ll show you best ways to reach them.
