Adidas just dropped the greatest Nike soccer ad.

Nike invented this genre. If you grew up watching soccer in the 90s you remember Airport ‘98, Joga Bonito ‘06, Take It To The Next Level ’08.

Now Adidas ran the same playbook better, beating Nike at their own game, by dropping a 5 minute short film before the 2026 World Cup, featuring Soccer Legends versus Local Crews led by Timothée Chalamet.

Three takeaways:

1. Build the world first, product second. Merch follows myth. Nostalgia is a brief, not a tone.

2. Time it right and you own the genre even if someone else invented it.

3. Cast for cultural fit. Chalamet is the kid who grew up romanticizing European football. Bad Bunny is Latin America. Together they cover the two biggest World Cup host cultures, and both are genuine fans.

nstagram launched a "filter" that went viral across Latin America and Southeast Asia before most of the US even noticed.

It wasn't a filter. It was AI generating a new image each time: nostalgiacore aesthetic, digicam grain, the whole thing. After going massively viral, Instagram pulled it in under 24hrs. Likely couldn't sustain the compute cost at scale.

But the more interesting story is the comments: people weren't just skeptical of AI, they were angry about the gap between what it promised (nostalgia, film, authenticity) and what it actually did (alter your face, use your data, fake the feeling).

The counter-narrative was immediate: buy a disposable, get a roll developed, use VSCO. Remember VSCO girls? We’re seeing a return to that analog aesthetic, but Meta trying to simulate it with AI is clashing with the audience craving it.

Three things worth noting for anyone building in content, social, or AI:
The demand signal for nostalgiacore is enormous. The tolerance for AI delivering that aesthetic is shrinking. And audiences are sharp enough to name the gap in real time.
