What are your expectations for your manager? Are they supposed to be an image of what you aspire to be, and if so, what kind of person are they? The Fast Company article, 3 Red Flags That Your Boss is Toxic—and How to Get Out, depicts how managers can (sometimes unknowingly) create an atmosphere that does not encourage growth.

Whether you’re the employed or you’re the employer, this article can help identify red flags to be aware of. We recommend giving it a read for managerial tips, or to grasp when it’s time to move on.

It can sometimes be difficult to identify a bad or unhealthy leader—especially during an interview process or during the first few months of employment.

One of our favorite recently read books is Steve Herz’s “Don’t Take Yes for an Answer.” It dives deep into communications habits and how to improve them, no matter your current skill level. It’s a useful book that can be beneficial to any profession or industry.

What’s the first book you’ve read this new year?

Bravo to Burger King UK—the brand is using its platform to highlight small restaurants to support during this difficult time for the hospitality industry. We love to see businesses supporting other businesses and applaud this campaign.

What are some of your favorite restaurants to support right now? We personally love Veselka :: Beceлкa (and they offer nationwide shipping!) and Superiority Burger. You can purchase fun Superiority Burger merch online or order directly from the shop if you are local to NYC.

The season of giving isn’t over yet. Small businesses are struggling and there are organizations that you can donate to that will make a huge difference. Our recommendation is Roar NY, which supports the New York City hospitality industry by providing direct cash assistance to restaurant workers impacted by the pandemic.

Other ways to help include buying directly from restaurants (sans third party delivery apps), or buying gift cards from small businesses to use in the future.

Leave your favorite small businesses to support in the comments below.

With the holidays and the new year among us, we recommend scheduling time for reflection. What were some of the biggest trials you’ve overcome in 2020 (and trust us—we know there were many); what skills and habits will you continue to build upon in the future?

By cultivating self-reflection skills, it becomes easier to assess the patterns of our daily lives. Celebrate how far you’ve come, and identify habits to grow (and cut!) in 2021.

When you wake up in the morning, how do you consume your news? For us, it’s a combination of go-to websites, podcasts and of course—daily newsletters. Today, we’re sharing a few of our favorites:

+ Morning Media Newsfeed – presented by Adweek, covering the day’s biggest media stories
+ Morning Brew – a whimsical view of daily news, covering the latest from Wall Street to Silicon Valley
+ The New York Times Daily Briefing - a daily, real-time newsletter, updated throughout the morning, with happenings and breaking news specific to your geographical location

What are some of your favorites?

There are really only four ways to “do” something—by keeping these methods in mind while building out your to-do list, you can maximize efficiency and prioritize tasks in a more meaningful way. These four methods are:

Completion – doing the task; leverage strengths when thinking about which tasks to complete yourself!
Deletion – eliminating a task that is unimportant or unnecessary
Delegation – assigning the task to someone else
Deferment – putting the task off until later; allows tasks that are critical or time sensitive to be of primary focus

Take a look at your to-dos and categorize accordingly—this can increase efficiency and help you in mastering time management.
