With the announcement of Threads, the digital marketing and social media world is poised for another major disruption, the likes of which we haven't seen before.

While imitators and copycats can often pop up, it's rare for one to dethrone an established player in a virtual coup. The timing couldn't have been better for Meta, with Musk's Twitter currently flailing and making head-scratching changes to the platform. With all the momentum behind it Meta stands to replace Twitter as the premier short-form communications platform. It's integration with Instagram and Facebook making it all the more of a threat.

Advertisers dissatisfied with the recent decisions at Twitter and aghast at the lack of brand safety measures and the increase in hate-speech have likely been looking for an alternative to spend their advertising dollars. Although Threads isn't quite there yet, it's already massive user base and its promise of further development means it is all the more likely to fully replace Twitter. Again, the integration with Meta can't be overstated as this move also allows advertisers to work from one platform - a strong preference for many.

By this time next year, will Twitter still be around?
