International Woman’s Day. March 8. Holds a very different meaning throughout the world. Growing up a Russian immigrant I recall how important this day was. Not in the flowers or chocolates or some throw away chachki that men think they “have to” gift women in their lives. But in the history and meaning of March 8th.
IWD is more than a global celebration of social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It’s not so much a holiday as a day of recognition and action.
IWD originated from women’s suffrage and labor movements in North America and Europe during the early 20th century with Socialist and far-Left roots. In some parts of the world, IWD still reflects its political origins with protests and calls for radical change; in other areas, particularly in the West, it is largely sociocultural and centered on a celebration of womanhood. Here, in the States, we have a way of filtering, watering down, homogenizing, and twisting it all around for cheap profit.
A close female friend posited earlier: “How much do you think a mother of 7 starving kids in Nigeria gives a s**t about women’s empowerment, gender identities and body positivity? Or a muslim woman that lives in fear that her family can stone her to death if she remove her veil?
Empowerment and society’s misconceptions of ego really has the upper hand.”
The reality since the beginning of time has been this: No woman = no man. We can argue that we evolved from Protozoa but let’s not.
Can we or can’t we today define what a “woman” is?
Another close female friend put it this way: “If gender is a construct, the mere notion of being a woman is meaningless. Unfortunately. This is today. Here and now. Are we in this country systematically erasing the concept of what a woman is and has been throughout history? Will the notion of the Divine Feminine be gone from our collective consciousness soon?”
Food for thought over a martini and a smoke late at night. Cause for action the next day.
March 8th is a necessary step towards the representation of women, equal rights and justice.
