“America’s Worst Mom,” Lenore Skenazy (), tells that kids need more freedom.

Research from the Institute for Family Studies found most American 14-year-olds aren’t allowed to go past their own street alone, and even by 17, most still can’t leave their neighborhood without supervision.

Skenazy says decades of fear-based news, tracking culture, and pressure on parents to constantly monitor their kids have changed the way families approach independence — despite violent crime rates being far lower than in the ’90s.

Now, 13 states have passed free-range parenting laws to protect parents who allow their children more freedom.
