Happy World Social Media Day!
It’s wild to think how far social media has come—and how far I’ve come with it.
My journey started back in 2013 during the biggest, most impactful fundraising campaign I’ve ever been part of: Buck Up Bucks County. In just under two months, we raised over $300,000 for our local homeless shelter. The campaign ran in partnership with the local newspaper, which published names and photos of donors every day.
As I hustled around town collecting donations and snapping photos, I’d ask each business if they were on Facebook or Twitter (remember, no IG or TikTok back then!) so we could tag them.
More often than not, I’d hear:
“My 15-year-old set up something on the Book Face, but I don’t know what to do with it. I’m too busy making/selling [fill in the blank] to worry about marketing on whatever that thing is!”
When the campaign wrapped, I was proud—and totally burnt out. But I also knew I’d hit the ceiling in that role. I had no idea what was next, but I couldn’t stop thinking about all the local businesses that had no clue how to harness this growing marketing tool.
I had a spark of experience, a sense of what was coming, and the willingness to dive in. That’s when I started offering social media help—doing it and teaching it.
Twelve years later, social media has evolved.
It’s inspired, connected, infuriated, delighted, and drained us all.
It’s made the world smaller and helped build real relationships.
I’ve worked with hundreds of businesses—local legends, national brands, and even across the pond (👋 Katie MacDonald). Some clients have become dear friends—my business besties Kathy Marcino KMM Consulting and Rachel Carey with Emerging Lotus Coaching, LLC, I’m talking about you. I’ve made connections through networking groups, Phillies posts, cat memes, and photography threads.
It’s been a ride.
Lately, though, the shine has worn off. Not because of the people—but because of the platforms. Between constant changes, shady algorithms, and the pressure to always be "on," it’s exhausting.
So today, on Social Media Day, I spent time planning a pivot.
One where I’m not tethered to my screen 24/7.
One that leans into what’s always worked—relationship-building, networking, print, PR, email, and a smart mix of marketing channels.
That pivot might even mean retiring the name Social Chicy. 😬
If you're curious what’s next—or want to be part of shaping it—I’d love your feedback. I’ve got a short survey and would be so grateful for your input.
Drop a comment below or DM me and I’ll send you the link.
Thanks for being part of this ride.
