“In a world that entices us to browse through the lives of others to help us better determine how we feel about ourselves…and to in turn feel the need to be constantly visible, for visibility these days seems to somehow equate to success, do not be afraid to disappear—from it, from us—for a while and see what comes to you in the silence.” - a powerful word for writers from my personal icon whose win tonight sets a whole new standard for creators of every kind 🏆

Let’s take a moment to reflect on the power of Black women in Postal History.

Mary Fields was a legend in Postal History. Six feet tall with a quick temper and generous heart. She became the first Black woman to carry mail on a Star Route for the United Stated Post Office Department. Mary was emancipated in 1863 and began working as an independent contractor with the Post Office in 1895. She used a stage coach to deliver the mail in the unrelenting winters of North Montana.

There is no American history without us at the inception. There are no American institutions that have not been carved by our labor, vision, discipline and genius.

When we say fund the United States Postal Service, we are saying fund Black history, Black legacy and Black Workers.

Write Black Love Letters is a creative intervention encouraging us all to FUND the USPS by buying stamps and sending Black love letters and postcards. We are centering love, connection and beauty in a time of isolation, tension and change. We are celebrating our historic contributions to the USPS and demanding that our legacy be protected.

“Once let the black man get upon his person the brass letters, U.S.; let him get an eagle on his button, and a musket on his shoulder and bullets in his pocket, and there is no power on earth which can deny that he has earned the right to citizenship.”

- Civil rights leader and formerly enslaved worker Frederick Douglass, 1863, in remarks encouraging the enlistment of African American soldiers during the Civil War.
