ABOUT THE MAD HAND ARTS, GRAPHICS & DESIGN

Working in both digital and fine arts media, and in most disciplines, The Mad Hand are prolific producers of high-impact, out-of-the-box design. Our portfolios include advertising, book & CD cover design, poster art, logo & identity design, merchandise design, promotional materials, print collateral of all types, and much more. We have 21 "A" ratings on

Angie's List, and appear in Angie's List Honor Roll. The Mad Hand is run bow to stern by our award-winning art director. ALL design and artwork is conceived and executed by the Art Director personally with input from clients. We do not subcontract or outsource. We are a strongly pro-environment and animal-friendly company, donating many hours of design time yearly to humane awareness campaigns, such as for Rational Animal and the Coalition for NYC Animals. We're in New York, but can work with anyone anywhere who can view digital drafts of their projects by e-mail. Write us at [email protected] for a quote, or visit www.themadhand.com for further information. We'd love to develop your project ideas! ABOUT THE ART DIRECTOR

Jane Sayre Denny is a prolific artist and an award-winning illustrator. Trained at New York's High School of Art & Design and The School of Visual Arts, she has been ad designer for Sesame Workshop, illustrator for Cartoon Galleries, Inc., assistant to Sandro La Ferla (world famous backdrop & prop designer), and through The Mad Hand, designer for countless clients and products. Her strong fine arts background gives her an eye and skill-set far superior to competitors in digital media. A musician as well, with an early career in recording studio management (where she was often the house designer), she specializes in art for music, and event graphics. Jane Sayre Denny is the creator of 'The Pride, The Award-Winning Reality Cat Cartoon Starring Crazy Johnny' (http://www.thepridecartoon.com), author/illustrator of 'Emmaline' (the little black squirrel who lives in Queens) and 'The Twelve Cats of Christmas,' and is an excellent illustrator of animals and wildlife. For-hire illustrated works include the 'Power Kid' child empowerment series by Obi Nwokolo, and 'The Cats On My Block' by Valerie Sicignano (co-founder of the NYC Feral Cat Initiative) for The Humane Society of New York. All titles can be found on Amazon.com. Boutique and specialty gifts carrying designs and artwork by Ms. Denny can be found in her Zazzle.com shops, The White Cat Co., Before Now Gifts, The Pride Cartoon and EmmalineBook. Inspirational pet ID tags carrying her designs can be found at www.dogtagart.com/artists/jane-sayre-denny

Ms. Denny was a featured designer and interviewee in HOW Design's 2003 release, 'Idea Revolution' on the subject of channeling creative inspiration, by Clare Warmke. Dennyโ€™s biography appears in Marquis' Who's Who in America. ABOUT OUR FACILITY

For digital graphics we work on an iMac computer in the Adobe Creative Suite and other industry standard graphics applications as needed. We have all relevant hardware and software, can work to the specs of any outside print shop, publisher or manufacturer, and can share files in minutes. For fine art projects, we are experienced in most media, and are expert mimics of most artistic styles. We do some photography. The Harlem Magic Masters have been my client for over 10 years. They are comedy/entertainment basketball with an awesome mission: Inspire kids to stay in school, get good grades, go to college, and be upstanding citizens. Their programs include messages of anti-bullying, inclusion, love of learning, and importance of family. These are delivered through the medium of great basketball shows, inspiring assemblies, and games where kids, teachers and parents interact with the team.

Over many years, I have designed everything for them from a souvenir basketball to a trade show booth to a website... and more e-blasts than I can count. Each e-blast promotes a timely program to schools in NYC and beyond. The one I'm showing here is the latest.

Great respect and thanks to the Harlem Magic Masters for many years of patronage. I am so proud to be their designer.

A recent project: Logo and graphics collateral for Elizabeth Forel's Animals Matter NYC Substack.

Substack is a little peculiar in that they're pretty rigid about design choice. They give you no options to customize your Substack look. All logos, page headers and other graphics must fit a certain, often very small, size. But no matter. I worked to their specs and in the end, I understand that their inflexibility is a way to keep their look uniform across the platform.

The theme of Elizabeth's Substack is the worsening situation with homeless and at-risk animals in NYC, whether it's feral and homeless cats and their overwhelmed caregivers, or dogs surrendered for absurd reasons to city Animal Control where they are more often euthanized than saved. It's too sad. I can't even.

For simplicity's sake, because most of the graphics will appear at very small sizes, and/or at a prescribed size and proportion, I used a blocky sans-serif font and a very simple graphic (good practices in any logo design, really). The animal heads are deliberately generic so that they could represent cats, dogs, horses, or any pointy-eared animal.

This may come across only subliminally, and I'm good with that, but the colors of the animal heads are meant to symbolize worsening, from orange (warning) to red (serious) to dark red (critical).

I'm showing here the logo; what Substack calls the "wordmark" (I would have called that the page header, but it's so tiny, I agree that it needs another name); a custom section break (a personalized divider between one section of the newsletter and another); and a header that appears only in the emailed version of a Substack article.

If you found this interesting, let me know. I've been encouraged to start a Substack hub myself. I may do that.

One and a half of my logo designs in action!

My client, Alex Gometz, is the owner of Prehab, NY (Physical Therapy), and Concussion Management of NY (Institute for Concussive Rehabilitation). Here he has used the two logos I made for him on glass panels behind the reception area of his facilities in NYC. Love the look!

Wow! I just found out that my logo design for Coalition to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages has gone international. It's being used by kindred organizations in Montreal, Canada and Mallorca, Spain! Organizers felt it touched their hearts. It warms mine to hear that.
