As we kick off Women’s History Month, ADM Insights & Strategy is celebrating women whose research changed how we understand people, culture, and insight.

Along those lines, we honor Zora Neale Hurston — author, anthropologist, and one of the most innovative researchers of the 20th century. Trained at Howard University, Barnard College, and Columbia University, she combined rigorous fieldwork with a deep insider perspective. Hurston immersed herself in communities, practicing participant observation to document behaviors, beliefs stories, and lived experiences.

Her ethnographic writing centered the voices of her participants, using rich dialogue and “multivocal” narratives that brought readers onto the porch, into the jook joint, and into the ritual space alongside her. That commitment to listening closely, honoring lived experience, and capturing context is at the heart of robust qualitative and cultural insight work.

Hurston once described research as “formalized curiosity…poking and prying with a purpose” — a reminder that great insights start with genuine fascination about people and their worlds. As market researchers and social scientists, we stand on the shoulders of pioneers like Hurston every time we design a research study or advocate for culturally grounded insights in our work.

It’s that time of year again!

Each year we close the company for 3.5 weeks to observe the Winter Holidays, spend time with loved ones, and rest.

At ADM Insights & Strategy our team and our clients are diverse. As our team members and many of our clients prepare to celebrate a variety of important holidays, our offices will be closed December 11 through the morning of January 6.

So, while we step away from work during the Winter Break, we wish those who may be celebrating a: Meaningful Advent, Happy Hanukkah, Restful End to the Semester, Festive Solstice, Feliz Noche Buena, Merry Christmas, Happy Boxing Day, Happy Kwanzaa, Joyous Watch Night, and a Celebratory New Year’s!

How can systems be improved? How can programs and communications be developed with local relevance and success? What can be gained by an approach rooted in community participation, cultural contexts, and holism?

In his recent articles ADM Insights & Strategy Principal Christopher Ashford tackles three critical shifts that are needed to improve systems for global education reform.

“It’s not about whether you’re deploying AI, LMS platforms, or digital assessments. It’s about whether those tools reflect local languages, cultural norms, and pedagogical realities…Too much of what we call 'impact' is built around outputs: enrollment rates, devices distributed, teacher workshops held. While these numbers have their place, they don’t explain why families disengage, why tools go unused, or why a program that works in one district quietly fizzles in another…Here’s where a cultural anthropological lens becomes essential.”
