DID YOU KNOW?

The Gap Band’s name isn’t just catchy… it’s HISTORY.

G.A.P. stands for Greenwood • Archer • Pine
— three streets in Tulsa, Oklahoma that formed the heart of Black Wall Street.

Before 1921, this community was one of the most thriving Black economic hubs in America… built on ownership, excellence, and unity.

Then it was destroyed during the Tulsa Race Massacre.

But the legacy didn’t disappear.

Through their music, The Gap Band turned those street names into something the world could never forget…
🎶 Rhythm became remembrance.
🎶 Sound became legacy.

Sometimes what we dance to… carries a deeper story.

BORN ON THIS DAY - FEBRUARY 19, 1940 - SMOKEY ROBINSON

Smokey Robinson is one of the most influential architects of modern American popular music, whose songwriting and leadership helped define the Motown sound. Born in 1940 in Detroit, Michigan, Robinson founded The Miracles and became one of Berry Gordy’s earliest collaborators at Motown Records. As lead singer of Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, he delivered enduring hits such as “Shop Around,” “The Tracks of My Tears,” and “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me,” distinguished by his smooth tenor and emotionally nuanced phrasing.

Beyond performing, Robinson was a prolific songwriter and producer, penning classics not only for The Miracles but also for artists like The Temptations and Mary Wells. His compositions blended pop accessibility with soulful introspection, helping Motown cross racial and geographic boundaries during the civil rights era. As a Motown executive, Robinson played a key role in shaping the label’s artistic direction and commercial strategy.

Over decades, he has remained a vital creative presence, earning induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Smokey Robinson’s legacy lies in his lyrical sensitivity, melodic sophistication, and lasting influence on soul and pop music.
