Last week, Account Coordinator and B-Engagement Lead, Ella Burrows, accompanied by our Sr. Director of Client Solutions, Florin Helf, had the pleasure of attending the B-Corporations Champions Retreat in Philadelphia focusing on this years theme, Humanity @ Work. It was an honor to learn and connect with other amazing b-corps and members of the B-Lab community who are on the ground using business as a force for good. From the incredible sessions that sparked conversations across the room around racial justice, combating climate change, and building a collective movement together, there was abundance of knowledge to be shared. We are leaving this week recharged, inspired, and grateful to be a part of such an impactful community. This week, humanity was at work!

Embracing new measures in diversity can help agencies make their employees feel seen and included. Cultural differences can be an opportunity to drive different individuals together rather than apart. Here’s four ways to start making a change:

1. Having a dedicated social impact mission can create a workplace that is actively participating in helping real-world dilemmas and communities that need help.

2. When the workplace is open to new solutions, employees and others are likely to have an input on corrective DEI practices to make the environment a better place for all.

3. We live in a period of collective activism, which is necessary for change; agencies that support this will raise higher standards of altruism.

4. Last but not least, when we all recognize that everyone’s lives are different, policies become more inclusive and less biased.

Through examining their own company practices, Meta has discovered that working remotely has increased diversity in their workforce. When employees are working at different points across the globe, this brings together a range of different cultures and identities. Working remotely has also been reported as a safer, more comfortable option for some workers. Being able to provide different options and opportunities around the world has opened a new realm of inclusivity for marginalized communities.

"The LGBTQ+ community is endlessly diverse and intersectional in nature, but many members share a unifying experience of being othered, particularly in workplace settings. Many feel compelled to monitor their presentation of gender and sexuality constantly at work. Some disclose by choice — others involuntarily. Many must respond to intrusive questioning, being misgendered, unsolicited commentary about clothing, and other microaggressions. Many, too, face harassment and outright discrimination, with research finding that LGBTQ+ workers make 22% less than non-LGTBQ+ workers. And when it comes to actually seeking mental health care, many navigate added barriers — from finding a therapist who is LGBTQ+, or who understands LGBTQ+ health needs, or who simply accepts and affirms their identity."
