Ain't Misbehavin', the Tony Award-winning Fats Waller musical r***e, is running in Los Angeles at the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center from May 21 to June 8, 2026. Produced by the Ebony Repertory Theatre, the vibrant Harlem Renaissance tribute stars Grammy winner Ledisi and NAACP Award-winner Chester Gregory.

👩🏾‍💻 The stage musical Ain’t Misbehavin’ originated in New York City as a musical tribute to legendary jazz pianist and composer Fats Waller and the music of the Harlem Renaissance era.

The title comes from the 1929 jazz song “Ain’t Misbehavin’,” written by Fats Waller, Andy Razaf, and Harry Brooks for the Broadway r***e Hot Chocolates at Connie’s Inn in Harlem.

The modern stage production itself first opened in 1978 at the Manhattan Theatre Club cabaret before moving to Broadway, where it became a major hit and won the Tony Award for Best Musical.

The show celebrates the sounds, nightlife, and culture of Harlem during the 1920s and 1930s, including famous venues like the Cotton Club and Savoy Ballroom.

The current Los Angeles-area production of Ain’t Misbehavin’ near Inglewood is being presented by Ebony Repertory Theatre at the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center in Los Angeles.

The announced cast includes:

* Ledisi
* Chester Gregory
* Connie Jackson
* Marty Austin Lamar
* Natalie Wachen

The musical does not follow a traditional character-driven storyline with fixed roles. Instead, the performers act as a jazz ensemble celebrating the music of Fats Waller and the Harlem Renaissance era through songs, dance, and musical performances.

The production is directed by Wren T. Brown with choreography by

Hey, you could smoke a spliff with a cliff
But there's still no mountain high enough
Or wide enough to touch
The naughty, nappy, nasty n***a, the nasty, trashy, ho-happy pappy
That's happy to be nappy
Me and Vin Rock when spots, hit flocks
In groups and troops with Timbo boots and jail suits
That's how I roll when my hairdo don't
When the will I got wantin' competition ain't dope
Beat ya, break ya, broke ya, smoke ya, take ya
Send you to your little group on mute sooner or later
He wanna flip, tell him full, semi, half with a dip
And all that other Ringling Brothers s**t
Sporty, naughty, hi, bye, greater than nature, why I
Shin slam the film-flam and then jam
You can run, but you can't hide, you can't go far
No matter where you go, there you are
We gonna break (naughties)
We gonna bash (naughties)
We gonna roll (naughties)
We gonna smash (naughties)
We gonna break (naughties)
We gonna bash (naughties)
We gonna roll (naughties)
We gonna smash (naughties)
Here we go, yo (we gonna)
Hit a n***a, kill a n***a, we'll come back
See a sucker, stretch a sucker, guard your naps
Cussin' wasn't nothin' 'til a black man rapped
See a 40, suck a forty, guess who's back?
You're chillin' with a titty-feelin' villian
Steppin' to the puny, puddy punks catchin' feellings
I hit so many guts, call me gutter, I'm the bread and butter
Punk motherf**kers I'll cut up, workin' from the gut up
Brand new steady, heavy as a Chevy
Ready, full of piddy-peddy, I'm Friddie-Freddie
Place your bet on a vet, the three-man threat
What you see is what you get
We gonna break (naughties)
We gonna bash (naughties)
We gonna roll (naughties)
We gonna smash (naughties)
We gonna break (naughties)
We gonna bash (naughties)
We gonna roll (naughties)
We gonna smash (naughties)
Comin' 'round a corner with my uptown bunch
I'll bet your bottom dollar that you're bottom-bunk chumps
Give it up, it's a juice thing, I'm steppin' for the rep and
Wreckin' all the rest and weapon testin' on who's steppin'
Ain't no bluff for the niggy-nuff, for the rugged rough stuff
N***a, if you're tough, knuckle up (we gonna-)
I'll cut your ass like class, then blast you by the trash
After I laugh then I'll dash
You can't handle the scandal of an uptown vandal
Shootin' up your toes, makin' sandals
Somebody told me that you owe me, but can't nobody hold me
I do my dirt all by my lonely
We gonna break (naughties)
We gonna bash (naughties)
We gonna roll (naughties)
We gonna smash (naughties)
We gonna break (naughties)
We gonna bash (naughties)
We gonna roll (naughties)
We gonna smash (naughties)
We gonna
We gonna
We gonna
We gonna (naughties)
We gonna
We gonna (naughties)
We gonna
We gonna (naughties)
We gonna
We gonna (naughties)
We gonna
