This head tilt isn’t just cute; eagles have extra vertebrae in their necks that give them an incredible range of motion, helping them scan their surroundings and stay aware of potential threats.
In the wild, awareness alone isn’t enough. Bald eagles need safe habitats and clean food sources to survive. You can help protect them by choosing non-lead tackle and ammunition, properly disposing of fishing line, and supporting habitat conservation.

Today is a time to pause and appreciate how strong and resilient Jackie and Shadow have grown over the years. Despite every challenge they have faced, their bond with one another has never wavered. It is truly heartwarming to see them continue to thrive, living healthy and peaceful lives in their beautiful mountain home. They are a remarkable pair—graceful, powerful, and deeply cherished.

I often think back to moments like the one captured in this photo, when they sat quietly together, gazing out over the lake in perfect harmony. Those calm, shared moments reflect the trust and connection they have built. Though it is a symbol of strength, at this moment it is simply a vulnerable creature in need of help.

A wildlife rescue officer arrives just in time. Carefully, he approaches the eagle, gently holding a blanket to cover and protect it. Every movement is slow and respectful, knowing that even in pain, the eagle remains a proud and powerful bird.

This scene is a reminder of human compassion toward nature. Thanks to quick action and care, the injured eagle now has a chance to heal and, hopefully, to return to the freedom of the open sky. It is a story of hope, rescue, and the deep connection between people and the wild world around them.

Today, while Owen was making his way around the lake, he decided to stop by Dana Park in Fawnskin. His timing turned out to be perfect, because during his brief visit, Jackie and Shadow made a fly-by appearance.

Sometimes you can spend hours waiting for a glimpse of an eagle, and other times it happens almost instantly — just like it did today. Luckily, Owen happened to be looking up at the right moment as the eagles soared in the distance toward Holcomb Valley.

It has been a pleasant weekend so far, with beautiful weather here in the eagles’ neighborhood around Big Bear Lake.
