Twenty-five years after 9/11, I find myself thinking not only about what happened that day, but what happened to New York afterward.

About the words we use to describe history. About Mike Bloomberg and the city he inherited. About leadership, competence and what happens when a city slowly starts accepting dysfunction as normal.

Fiscal mismanagement. Disrespect for policing. Declining quality of life. Political theater replacing the less glamorous job of governing.

A city can absorb a surprising amount of bad leadership for a surprisingly long time.
Eventually, the bill comes due.

Six weeks after giving birth, I boarded the QE2 to pitch more than 30 prospective clients. Big Agency had paid $60,000 for two executives to attend, but my supposed partner never showed up. Most of the prospects seemed far more interested in cocktails and a free cruise than hiring a PR firm.

That voyage taught me plenty about agency theater, wasted money and the danger of chasing clients who don’t value the work. Today, I don’t compete in RFP beauty contests, slash my retainers or promise one-month miracles.

Clients don’t need an expensive machine. They need judgment, expertise and someone who knows exactly where to put the effort.

I woke up yesterday morning and read The Wall Street Journal’s article, titled, “The Rise of Million-Dollar Companies with Just One Employee” and promptly had it emailed to me simultaneously by multiple friends and associates.

There’s no doubt about it. With the technological advances in AI we have access to, we’ve entered the age of highly functioning, highly profitable companies with one employee. Of course, highly profitable single employee companies have been extremely profitable for decades, but the rise in easy-to-use AI tools is catapulting the category into primetime.
