“Can colors be theatrical? We’ll find out.”

In this Sunday’s Arts & Leisure, profiles with visuals by . She writes, “Julio Torres would like to design a hotel. Or a lake house. He has plans for a sand castle competition and a coffee-table book that may also be a pop-up book. Once between takes for PROBLEMISTA, the 2024 film that he wrote, directed and starred in, his co-star Tilda Swinton grabbed his hand and whispered that they should conceptualize a theme park. .tv, performance artist and close collaborator on the deranged television comedy he created, FANTASMAS, thinks that he should run for governor. It’s possible.

A former writer for , a standout on the dreamy, bizarro TV show LOS ESPOOKYS, a children’s book author, an indelible late-night guest and a stand-up comedian who often sits down, Torres always seems to be adding more hyphens to what is already an impressively multihyphenate life.”

COLOR THEORIES continues through OCT 5 at .space.new.york.

On Sept. 3, he will add two more — monologuist and playwright — when his first Off Broadway play, , begins performances at Performance Space New York. If COLOR THEORIES is not perhaps his most personal work, it is a pristine distillation of his coolly absurdist approach and his commitment to aesthetic experiment.”

🎉 HAPPY OPENING 🎉 to the company of SEAGULL: TRUE STORY by rising star Russian director . Presented by , in association with .foundation & , this world premiere, written by Eli Rarey, is inspired by Molochinikov’s own experience of leaving Russia for America after speaking out against Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. Now through June 1 at La MaMa’s historic Ellen Stewart Theatre.

SEAGULL: TRUE STORY centers on Kon, a director at the Moscow Art Theatre, who stages a bold, free-spirited production of Chekhov’s THE SEAGULL—until Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine casts a shadow of censorship upon the work. His once vibrant reimagining, rooted in freedom, is reduced to an empty shell of his vision. Determined to save his play, Kon flees to New York, hoping to bring his true vision to life. But the American dream proves cold. His important and symbolic theater production finds little welcome, and he faces loss and rejection. Like Treplev from THE SEAGULL, he teeters on the brink of su***de but refuses to give up. Torn between his Russian roots and an elusive American paradise, Kon must redefine himself as an artist in order to survive.

SEAGULL: TRUE STORY is inspired by recent events in Molochnikov’s own life. An award-winning director in Russia, Molochnikov left Russia in 2022 after speaking out against Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. He cannot return home.

🎉THRILLED🎉 to be working on by the “absolute master of absurdist comedy” (NBC) . Running September 3-21, 2025 for 22 performances only at .space.new.york, 🌈 COLOR THEORIES 🌈 is a new theatrical spectacle that marks the Off-Broadway debut of JULIO TORRES.

Fresh from winning a 2025 Peabody Award for his HBO series FANTASMAS, which the judges noted “doesn’t so much defy categorization as much as it hopes to do away with categories altogether,” and hot on the heels of his directorial feature PROBLEMISTA (in which he stars opposite Tilda Swinton), COLOR THEORIES finds Torres blending stand-up, design, and dream logic into a whimsical exploration of color, emotion, and identity that is equal parts comedy, theater, and art piece. He is joined by scenic designer .

says, “I have some untested theories about colors that I’d like to explain via this multimedia, potentially synesthetic experience.”

Blast Off! 🚀 THE 7TH VOYAGE OF EGON TICHY (REDUX) has been extended to February 2, 2025.

“Adventurous and rewarding,” declares Charles Isherwood in The Wall Street Journal, calling it “a sly and playful meditation on the complexity of identity.”

“Gelb & co. have managed to re-create the astonishment of those earlier virtual performances and find fresh ways to dazzle us,” writes Kenji Fujishima in Theatermania, adding, “This is Gelb’s triumph. Pandemic quarantine may have come and gone, but the endearingly scrappy spirit and stage magic of The 7th Voyage of Egon Tichy shines as brightly as ever.”

“The only thing better than one Joshua William Gelb is two of him,” remarks David Barbour in Lighting & Sound. “Or three. Or four. Or...well, I finally lost count during this giddy adaptation of a Stanislaw Lem story, which blends live performance and video to hilarious effect. It’s an Olympic acting feat. I am late to the Theatre in Quarantine party but it’s delightful to know that Gelb’s online concept works so well in front of a live audience. It provides Under the Radar with a revivifying burst of originality.”

“A staggeringly inventive hourlong multimedia play,” raves Mark Rifkin in This Week in New York. “Gelb is hilarious as multiple Tichys. He never misses a beat as more and more Egons join him in the cramped space. It’s a tour de force for everyone involved.”

“A short strange trip that is sure to delight audiences,” muses Brett Singer in TheaterScene, adding, “Take a voyage with Egon Tichy – you won’t regret it.”

Created by director , playwright , and performer , and production of “The 7th Voyage of Egon Tichy [redux]” is presented by New York Theatre Workshop and Lucille Lortel Theatre.

The creative team includes Peiyi Wong (set & costume design), Marika Kent (lighting design), Jesse Garrison (video design), Florian Staab (original music & sound design), Jonathan Levin (props design) and Carly Levin (production manager & line producer).

🎉CONGRATULATIONS🎉 on your sold-out run of SUPPOSE BEAUTIFUL MADELINE HARVEY, legendary experimental theater icon Richard Foreman’s first new play in 10 years. Presented by & running DEC 13-22, this world premiere is adapted & directed for the stage by Kara Feely w/ live music composed by .

Beautiful Madeline Harvey has a problem: she is not certain whether she does or does not, in fact, exist. Handsome Roger Vincent, whose life has been stolen from him, waits for her at a boulevard café, where their eyes meet like an electric shock. A paper-thin love story within a paper-thin world, speeding, so it would seem, towards inevitable catastrophe… or perhaps, a very serious twist. Will Madeline Harvey
disappear by fire, by time, or simply disappear at last into her very own story? And will handsome Roger Vincent ever be able to tell the truth about all things?

The cast of includes , Daniel
Allen Nelson, Catrin Lloyd-Bollard, as well as , , & , along with voiceover work by Richard Foreman.

SUPPOSE BEAUTIFUL MADELINE HARVEY features a live ensemble performing a composed score of bubbling synths, stuttering drum machines, processed woodwinds, and heavy guitars. The text of the play is scored throughout in a kind of notated speech that ducks and weaves through the dense sound world. The musicians include Chloe Roe on guitar, voice, and synths; Jack Lynch on bass, sampling, drum machines, and synths; and Travis Just on saxophones, clarinets, drum machines, and synths.

Object Collection has been called “one of the essential voices in New York’s contemporary theater scene” (BOMB). Acclaimed for their invigorating blend of music and theater, Object Collection got
their start 20 years ago in Foreman’s own Ontological-Hysteric Theatre. SUPPOSE BEAUTIFUL MADELINE HARVEYS extends Richard Foreman’s legacy to a new generation of experimentalists.
