New York’s liquor stores and one of New York’s largest labor unions are united in seeking to keep wine sales out of big-box supermarkets.
The two groups warn that legislation would devastate over 3,300 independent small wine and liquor stores statewide, impacting about 50,000 workers.
Metropolitan Package Store Association Executive Director Michael Correra tells the Yonkers Times that these bills would shift profits to supermarket chains while threatening the livelihoods of about 50,000 workers in the thousands of mom-and-pop shops.
“This legislation will destroy the union workforce, local wine and liquor store merchants, and in-state wineries,” says Correra. “Working-class New Yorkers will be steamrolled.”
