āš ļø 1 in 4 teens report being solicited online on this app. And you need to
According to Pew Research, a majority of U.S. teens use… Snapchat?!
Yep… The App that has disappearing messages. While it wasn’t specially designed for this, the app that originally became famous for sharing n**es and pornographic images as well as selling drugs and illicit exchanges.
And… it kind of makes sense. There is no accountability on a messaging app where the messages disappear.
Welcome to another episode of Teen Tech Experiment šŸŽ„šŸ“± — where we break down what teens are actually using and what parents need to know.
The numbers are sketch-factor 100:
• According to Pew Research Center, 55–60% of U.S. teens (13–17) use Snapchat.
• About HALF use it daily.
• Snap’s CEO testified that 20 MILLION U.S. teens are on the app and 150 MILLION Teens worldwide. T
• Globally, teens make up a significant portion of the user base (approx. 25%), with hundreds of millions of adult users overall.
But here’s where it gets problematic.

āš ļø ~22% of teens surveyed say they’ve sent n**e or semi-n**e images via Snapchat.
āš ļø10,000 reports of sexually inappropriate messages are flagged every month
āš ļø ā€œDisappearingā€ messages can create a false sense of security — making it harder for parents to detect grooming, bullying, or dangerous behavior.
āš ļø ā€œQuick Addā€ can expose teens to strangers.
āš ļø The platform has been linked in reporting (including investigations by NPR) to cases involving drug sales to minors.
āš ļø Snapstreaks = pressure, anxiety, and serious FOMO.
This isn’t about fear.
It’s about facts.
And starting better conversations at home. šŸ šŸ’¬
At Teen Tech Experiment, we’re not anti-tech — we’re pro-awareness.
Save this. Share it. Start the conversation.

We can teach kids all the body boundaries and predator safety tips, but if we don’t help disable shame they can slip through our fingers.

Shame and silence are predators’ most powerful tool. Here’s how you can help disarm them.

Your kids’ favorite apps aren’t always as safe as they seem.

Apps like Pinterest, Bible App, Spotify, Fitbit, Apple Music, CapCut, Cash App, YouTube, BeReal, and more let adults message children directly. Even ā€œharmlessā€ apps can open the door to risky conversations, and even grooming.

Privacy settings aren’t enough. The best protection? Talk to your kids early, before exposure happens, and help them build an internal filter so they can spot and reject unsafe interactions.

Use tools like Good Pictures Bad Pictures to start age-appropriate conversations to help kids make safer choices.

ā€œChildren today are living through the largest social experiment in history,ā€ writes Pinterest’s CEO, Bill Ready.

ā€œFor years, kids around the world have been given unfiltered access to social media platforms.

ā€œThis social experiment has been conducted at scale, and thus, the results are now painfully clear: rising anxiety and depression, eroding concentration, and classrooms competing for attention.

ā€œAustralia has stepped in with a bold answer: banning social media for children under 16. I believe if tech companies fail to prioritize youth safety, other governments should follow Australia’s lead.

ā€œMost of my fellow tech CEOs dismissed Australia’s ban. Some have even suggested it is a ā€˜premature and performative’ measure. But I see this moment differently.ā€

A landmark legal verdict handed down on Wednesday in a Los Angeles courtroom changed all that.

After more than a week of deliberation, a jury found Meta, the owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp – as well as Google-owned YouTube – to be liable for addictive design features blamed for leading a teenage girl to depression and anxiety.

What if your first love was AI? According to sextech expert , that’s the reality for millions of people around the world. In her TED Talk, she explores the rise of AI-generated relationships, where real intimacy is replaced by a synthetic version that forgoes what love and connection are meant to be — awkward, complicated and human. ā€œThat friction in intimacy, that’s the feature, it’s not a bug. That’s where we build the muscles of human intimacy, where we learn empathy, communication,ā€ she says. ā€œAnd with AI … it’s gone.ā€ Visit the link in our bio to learn more from her talk.

A secondary school teacher and researcher is calling for a ban on AI ā€˜nudification’ features.

Eoghan Cleary - researcher with the Sexual Exploitation Research and Policy (SERP) Institute, has warned that sexually explicit material being facilitated and funnelled by social media platforms is ruining children’s lives.

Media regulator CoimisiĆŗn na MeĆ”n has said it is engaging with the European Commission over concerns that Elon Musk’s AI tool Grok is responding to user prompts asking it to remove the clothing from images of people, including minors.

🚨You may hear kids or teens using the slang term ā€œgooning.ā€šŸšØ

Online, ā€œgooningā€ commonly refers to excessive consumption of sexual content paired with compulsive m*sturbation.

Offline, kids may use the term casually, jokingly, or as a sexual insult, without fully understanding what it actually means. Because it’s catchy slang, it can spread quickly, even among children who don’t grasp the behavior it points to.

šŸ’”If you hear it, consider it a conversation cue. Start age-appropriate conversations early, so slang terms don’t become secrets, and kids know they can come to you without fear or shame.
