TRAVIS REUTER composed “Same Song” for his upcoming album, QUINTET MUSIC, in an effort to break free from the constraints of the jazz song structure (formally, melody-improvisation-melody musical ordering). The piece inverts this formal convention by sandwiching the melodic material with
improvisation. Tempo is obfuscated via broken rhythms, meter changes and polyrhythmic melody. Compositionally, a constant state of flux is created: material isn’t revisited. Theme is maintained via rhythmic and tonal structures.
